Welcome to the Basis Yorkshire Newsletter!

We've had a very busy few months here at Basis Yorkshire and lots of things to update you on, including funding success, new staff members and some exciting media coverage. Don't forget to keep updated with all our latest news by following us on social media and checking out our website...

Children in Need Funding Success!

We’ve been awarded a  3 year  Children in Need grant to continue our successful specialist one to one work with Young People experiencing or at risk of CSE. This will allow us to keep on our skilled and experienced Young People's Outreach Worker Carwen Jones to provide a vital service to girls and young women being sexually exploited or at medium to high risk thereof, offering a safe space for them to talk to someone they trust about how they feel, to help them recognise the risks they face and what they need to make a positive change in their lives. Carwen Jones says “Its brilliant news – I’m so pleased we can continue to support young girls and women in Leeds for this much –needed service”.

Time 2...Project Launch!

Want to hear more about the The Time 2... Project  - the new voluntary CSE service in York/N. Yorkshire? We'd like to invite you its launch on 13th July to introduce ourselves! It will be the perfect opportunity for you to meet the team, find out more about their priorities, referrals, multi agency working, our new website and evaluation and promotion of the project. There will be examples of the journey of 3 case studies provided by the team as well as some great guest-speakers. Places are limited - please book here!
WYPCC Funding Success

We have also just received a small grant from the WYPCC to support young girls that have experienced CSE and require therapeutic care and to develop resources specifically for young people with learning difficulties/disabilities.  Basis CEO Gemma Scire said “We are extremely grateful for the support and recognition of our work by Children In Need and the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. However, we are acutely aware that even with this funding, we still don’t have enough resource to meet the demands  and will therefore continue to work hard to raise more funds for our young people’s work and work alongside our partners to address issues of CSE”  Find out how you too can help here!

Upcoming Fundraisers...

Our staff are currently very busy training for some upcoming fundraisers! Taylor, Devin and Sarah are daring to take on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge to raise money for Basis on 6th August. You can sponsor them here!
Also, Amber is tackling her second open water swim alongside Caz Snell, and will be swimming Semer Water in August. You can sponsor them here!
How You Can Support Us...Throw A Cake Sale!

Here at Basis we rely heavily on donations as we do not have the resources to invest in large scale fundraising. The lovely School of Social Policy and Social Work at the University of York, where our Chair of Trustees Dr Kate Brown works, recently raised an amazing £73.07 by organising a cake sale on campus. We are so grateful for this generous donation! Why not throw your own bake sale? Find out how you could do just that and support Basis here...
Goodbye to Amy!

We're very sad to be saying goodbye to one of our student volunteers Amy Pollard, who has been volunteering for Basis Training for over a year after completing an internship last Summer then staying on as a volunteer. We wish her the best of luck as she moves to Sheffield to study nursing. Amy: "Thank you for being so kind and friendly during my time as a volunteer. I really wouldn't have got my nursing place without the experience I gained here."
To find out how you could get involved as a
volunteer, check out our website.
New ISVA/IDVA Role!

We have secured funding from Comic Relief for a three year ISVA/IDVA post, working with sex workers who have experienced sexual and domestic violence.  Our lovely colleague Taylor came into this post in June after previously working as the Historic CSE Support Worker. She has already begun indoor and street outreach to meet get to know the women, and connecting with other ISVA/IDVA services across West Yorkshire. For more info, see the website.

Goodbye Sarah And Welcome Izzy!

We are very sad to be saying goodbye to our student placement Sarah Finnigan, who is finishing her year long placement with Basis in June before returning to complete the final year of her BA Geography degree at the University of Leeds in September. Find out more about what she has been up to during her placement in this blog post

We are very excited to be welcoming our new placement student Izzy Kynoch, an English and Film student who will be spending the next year with us.
Basis Goes Global!

Basis Sex Work Project has been receiving high levels of media enquiries recently and we have struggled to dedicate resources to manage this as much as we wish to share our learning. We're also acutely aware of the disruption this causes to the women and their well-being which is our main priority. Sometimes we are able to share our evidence in a way that is time efficient without disrupting the women. Here is a perfect example of this - the managed approach and the increased levels of reporting of crimes against sex workers in Leeds was used in an article highlighting issues faced by sex workers in Argentina
