Is red wine good for your oral health?
If you care about the appearance of your smile, you probably know that red wine is among the worst offenders when it comes to staining. However, research suggests that the health benefits could be well worth slightly more frequent whitening treatments. In a recent study, researchers discovered that red wine, even if it is non-alcoholic, may inhibit the development of biofilm, which you know as harmful plaque.

Previous research has demonstrated a link between red wine consumption and improved heart health. Of course, these benefits are limited, so wine cannot replace a healthy lifestyle including good oral hygiene and regular dental care. However, it can certainly make an excellent adjunct.
Maternity Leave Extended
As a reminder, Dr. Cynthia Wong had decided to extend her leave another couple months to spend more time with her newborn baby, Caitlyn.
Rave reviews for our new hygienist, Manny Vasquez, RDH.
We continue to get great comments about Manny. Here's one sent to us by email:

"Manny is very personable & polite. His gentle approach performing hygienist procedures placed me at ease . I mentioned that to Mei and she said he has received many compliments. ...His positive approach and demeanor is a value to and for your staffing." RL
Sleep Apnea News
We are in the final phase of applying to be a Medicare provider of oral appliances for the treatment of OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). For those patients not able to tolerate the masks used with CPAP machines, these oral appliances can be life savers. But you don't need to be on Medicare to take advantage of this technology. If you've been diagnosed with OSA, we can help determine whether oral appliance therapy is right for you.
UCSF School of Dentistry Graduation Ceremony 2014
Congratulations Dr. David Thai!
Earlier this month, I was proud to witness a bright young student become a member of the dental profession. As a Bay Area resident and UC Berkeley graduate, David was mentored by a small group of local dentists for the few years before and through his dental school years. I'm glad I was part of that mentoring and wish him the best as he embarks on his new career! Click to see more photos
And the cycle begins again...
As I watched one student graduate this month, another made the decision to pursue a career in dentistry. During the past 2 months, Alex had the opportunity to shadow me during office hours in hopes to get a better real-life feel about the dental profession. At the completion of his stint with me, I was happy to hear that his experience in my office was influential in his decision to apply to dental school.
Next Hike
Watch for my next newsletter where I will report on my hike in Colorado in early July. If conditions permit, I hope to bag another "14'er" (14,000+ foot elevation peak)!
