As summer turned to fall this year, we completed a transformative kitchen remodel for longtime Seattle residents, Monte & Lynn. Both of Danish heritage, Lynn explained that they most wanted their kitchen to embrace the cozy quality that the Danes colloquially refer to as hygge. Though sometimes hard to explain and often hard to pronounce (sounds like hooga), hygge embraces a cozy quality of belonging, closeness, and intimate relationships. It’s easy to understand why coziness is sought after during the dark days of a Danish or PNW winter, yet regardless of the season, hygge is achieved in this charming project.
The 90 year old house is reinvented with an improved layout for ease of use. The remodel includes quality construction featuring a central island, built in benching in the dining space, and a further extension, beyond the interiors, to the patio outside, which is now connected to the house by a charming porch, pergola, and gate.
The interior design elements feature: light and bright white painted cabinetry, bracketed open shelving, bead board, wainscoting, marble counters, faceted glass door & drawer pulls, classic white subway tile backsplash, grounding dark stain on a rustic wood topped central island and oak hardwood floors—all against the backdrop of a serene pale blue palette. And now, transom windows, a vaulted ceiling in the addition, unique metal mesh lighting, colorful dishware displays, a classic Danish antique porcelain chandelier (hanging above the dining table) and punctuations of red inject the space with brightness and welcoming warmth.
Monte & Lynn are pleased with RCH’s construction management and ability to achieve the design elements that they desired most. The open kitchen has clearly defined work zones: a baking station for Monte (his cookies are the BEST!), a breakfast bar, food prep, a mobile device and planning station, cleaning, cooking, gathering and serving. Yes, there is even a sideboard buffet across from the dining table.
We are so pleased to have partnered with Monte and Lynn, to not only improve their vital living space, but to help them recognize the home of their dreams and in part to learn about their heritage and warm hearted hospitality!
