January 2017

“Njaanuary” is another name people use for the month of January here in Kenya.

It explains how people have had to scrape by to survive after the expenses of the holidays, sending their kids back to school, and taking almost a month off of work.

Thankfully, there has been no shortage of good things happening with Tin Roof Society this January. We are wrapping this month up richer from the experiences, connections and progress we’ve seen taking place in our organization. We wouldn't be able to say that if it weren't for your prayers and support, so thank you for your faithful support!

Below are a few highlights of what's been happening here with in Kenya and beyond this month...

Totally Sold Out 2017

Since it's launch in 2005, Totally Sold Out, an event hosted by our partners Kubamba, has grown to be one of the top events in Kenya. Every New Year's Eve, thousands of young people gather for a concert with some of Africa's top gospel artists. It brings together both the young and old for a night of thanksgiving, praise, and worship to God for the spiritual awakening experienced throughout the year. The event is broadcasted live on Citizen Television to reach millions across the continent of Africa and the world.

This year, Shawn had the honor to present the Gospel in front of the estimated 10,000 people in attendance and millions more on live TV. It was an amazing night to be a part of, and we couldn't be more encouraged by this generation that God is raising up to lead the country of Kenya closer to Him.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Last week, Shawn made a visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with a long time friend, and now colleague (more on this exciting development below!). The purpose of the trip was to identify potential partners for Tin Roof Society in Ethiopia as we continue to seek to expand our reach in East Africa and the Horn of Africa. It was an encouraging and successful trip that provided even more insight and new connections than were anticipated. We’re excited about what the future holds for us and our Ethiopian brothers and sisters, and look forward to sharing more about these developments in the days to come.

Simply Do Good

Seven months ago, we began mobilizing youth to do positive, godly things in their communities by meeting needs that many have complained about, but few have given action towards. This is the focus and heart behind Simply Do Good. And don't be mistaken-this isn’t a just a project, it’s a movement! And it's been incredible to see the numbers of people who have joined our band of "do-gooders". From university students, to young professionals, to radio DJ's... the list just keeps growing!

We spent the month of January planning our outreaches for this coming year. In February, Simply Do Good will transform into “Simply Love Good” for the month. We’re focusing on getting to know and love each other, and not letting political, regional or tribal differences divide us. This is especially important as Kenya has just entered their election year. Sadly, previous elections have resulted in division and even violence. We plan to be a part of the growing number of people who are actively fighting for unity and peace, by loving and serving one another with Christ centered hearts.

John & Julie Kirkland

Now, for some really exciting news! In 2004, Shawn was privileged to work alongside the Kirkland family in Kenya. We had always said that if we were to build a team in East Africa, we wanted them on it. Over the last year, God has orchestrated many circumstances to make that a reality. We are excited to be adding John and Julie to our Tin Roof Society team by the end of Spring 2017. John and Julie have spent over two and a half decades serving in East Africa, and bring with them a wealth of wisdom and experience. The Kirklands will be focusing on discipleship, leadership training and mentorship for our team members and some of our close partners.

We have built Tin Roof Society to be more than just a charitable organization that invests solely in people’s physical needs. The addition of John and Julie increases our capacity to network globally, partner locally, and most of all, impact eternally. If you’d like to be part of John and Julie’s support network, you can give online, or send them an email at:
john@tinroofsociety.com and julie@tinroofsociety.com.

Welcome to the team, John and Julie!

Once again, we want to thank each and every one of you who have supported the work of Tin Roof Society over the last year. Your prayers and giving have helped us get to where we are. We thank God for the ways you give generously so that we can continue networking for the Kingdom of God and sharing the love of Christ with as many people as possible.
