Over the past several days, our nation and community have been grieving the murder of George Floyd by a police officer. Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Sean Reed, and Tony McDade are also recent murder victims resulting from systemic racism in America. The subsequent protests are more than just a response to an isolated incident. They are a reaction to more than 400 years of racist and prejudicial systems. Change is necessary.
We all must work towards addressing deep-rooted issues of racial inequality, examine our own beliefs and biases and build an inclusive business community. We must do so both locally and nationally through intentional actions and with respect for the dignity of our Black community members.
Words are only good intentions and if we hope to change our community and country for the better, we need to take collective action. If you wish to support efforts toward racial justice and equity in our community, we urge you to send your support to Black-led community partners such as the Berkshire Chapter of the NAACP, BRIDGE, and ROPE. These organizations lead the way in fighting for justice for our diverse Berkshire residents.
To our Black-owned downtown businesses, residents, friends, and all those who are hurting, we offer our support, love, and voice. We see you. We feel you and we stand with you.
