Ten people rescued from Caloosahatchee River after boat sinks

Ten people were rescued from the Caloosahatchee River Saturday afternoon after a 32-foot boat hit the Cape Coral Bridge and sank.

Fried to lead embattled Florida Democrats

Nikki Fried, the last Democrat to hold a statewide office in Florida, was selected Saturday to chair the Florida Democratic Party as it looks to recover from its latest disastrous election cycle.

Fried emerged the winner in a four-way contest at the Sheraton Orlando North Hotel in Maitland on Saturday, fending off a major challenge from former state Sen. Annette Taddeo of Miami.

Scientists urge Florida residents to report nonnative lizards

The brown basilisk, a nonnative lizard, is gaining ground across South and Central Florida, and University of Florida scientists need more data to determine its status and potential impacts.

Wildlife specialists with the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences depend on geographic information to determine this lizard’s potential impacts on the environment, wildlife and human health. They need more information to stay ahead.

Local indie film series continues at Davis Center March 6

The Fort Myers Film Festival continues its 13th season with the film series T.G.I.M. on Monday, March 6, at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers.

Local judges and attendees get a chance to watch and then weigh in on how they feel about short indie films. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the show begins at 7 p.m.

Participants are invited to grab a drink, watch short films and intellectualize with host Eric Raddatz and co-host Melissa DeHaven on the first Monday of every month in season through March.

“Ding” Darling Wildlife Society announces photo contest winners

“Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge held an official judging for its 30th annual “Ding” Darling Amateur Nature Photography Contest. The 2022 winners were to be announced in October at the refuge’s inaugural Art in the Wild festival, but Hurricane Ian in September canceled the event and judging.

Judges selected three winners and 10 honorable mentions out of 140 entries from 22 states and three countries. All photograph entries were shot at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge complex.
