Forecast: High Fire Danger Tuesday


We’re in store for slightly cooler, breezy and less humid conditions with a mix of sun and clouds.


Unfortunately, our nicest weather this time of year is often accompanied with the threat of brush fires.

The combination of the dry air and a brisk north wind in the wake of Monday’s front will create a high fire danger across most of Southwest Florida.

Florida January jobless rate down


With service-related jobs topping employment gains, Florida’s unemployment rate dipped slightly as 2023 began.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity on Monday released a report showing the January jobless rate at 2.6%, down from a revised rate of 2.7% in December and down from 3.5% in January 2022.


An estimated 286,000 Floridians qualified as out of work in January from a workforce of 10.855 million.

It’s not uncommon for a visitor to pass by Chester Thomas and ask for a selfie. Or for a child to ask him for a hug. That’s what happens when you’ve become as well-known on Fort Myers Beach as the Pink Shell Resort’s security supervisor.


“They call me the mayor of Fort Myers Beach,” Chester said with a laugh.

Renowned cellist Thomas Mesa to perform with the Southwest Florida Symphony

The Southwest Florida Symphony has announced Thomas Mesa, a 2023 Sphinx Medal of Excellence winner, will perform the second Masterworks concert of the season on Saturday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers.

Mesa, a renowned Cuban-American cellist, will perform as Maestro Radu Paponiu leads Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B minor and other works by Edward Elgar and Jessie Montgomery, who is also a two-time laureate of the annual Sphinx Competition and past Medal of Excellence winner.
