President's Note & Strategic Plan Update

Hello Skiers,

I hope everyone has been enjoying the fantastic ski conditions we’ve had so far this year.  It’s nice to see snow falling as I write this note - it will certainly freshen up the trails. Our club is also having a great season in the membership department, with over 790 members this year.  This is very close to a record, and higher than we have seen for a number of years!

Our NNSC Board has been busy developing a new strategic plan.  With Columbia Basin Trust funding we were able to hire a consultant to assist in developing a a detailed plan to guide our priorities going forward.  Many thanks to all the members who took the time to complete our strategic planning survey; your input was very valuable during this process.
View 2017-2020 Strategic Priorities
As you can see from the chart, we have five major areas we will focus on going forward.  We have started work on some initiatives this year and will evaluate their success at the end of the season.

Any interested members who are keen on a specific topic from our strategic plan are invited to come forward to myself (klpoole@shaw.ca /250-825-9202) or info@nelsonnordicski.ca as we’d love to have your expertise moving forward.  We are not asking for huge time commitments; you could join a task force or attend a meeting to provide input for this year or planning for next season.

Enjoy the rest of the ski season and thanks for supporting our club!

Louise Poole, President

Operations Update
Busk Loop 1 Update: The logging in the Busk area created water issues that prevented us from opening up that trail this year.  Kalesnikoff will be helping us this summer to rectify the situation. Please note that while the trail is closed, Busk and Euphrates trail is a 2 way trail system - please ski accordingly.

Two way trail etiquette: Priority goes to anyone skiing downhill.  Otherwise, follow "rules of the road" eg: stay to the right when passing oncoming skiers.

Wildlife: Plenty of wildlife activity around our trail systems this season - we have had reports of a baby bear (gone now), moose, coyotes galore, and even a wolverine!

Camp Busk Loop Closure Feb. 12th & 13th: Cadets and Guides will be using Camp Busk and that trail will be CLOSED for skiing on those dates (the other Busk-Euphrates trails will remain open).

Stay on Trails: With our watery and treacherous terrain, it is important to ski only on groomed trails..heading off trails can be dangerous!

Candles: The burning of candles is prohibited in any of our warming huts for safety reasons

Preserve Classic Tracks: Skaters, please avoid skiing into the classic track.

Thank you,
Ann Popoff, Operations Manager
Tour de Soup - Amazing!
Thanks to Marilyn and her fantastic crew of volunteers (and Nelson Nordic staff), to the Farm Fresh Cafe, Kootenay Coop, Yellow Deli, Yum Son and Kootenay Bakery Cafe restaurants, and to all the skiers who came out to enjoy the delicious soup, ski our beautiful trails, and help raise over $850 to the Nelson Food Cupboard.

Let's hope this can become an annual event!
