This month we highlight two of the most sought after modern first editions in the world: Casino Royale and The Man with the Golden Gun by Ian Fleming

This month we highlight two of the most sought after modern first editions in the world.

Casino Royal | The Man with the Golden Gun

Currently in stock we have the two rarest James Bond first editions, both in very good condition. Casino Royale was the first book written by Ian Fleming. He wrote it in just two months, from his home Golden Eye, in Jamaica, and it was first published on 13 April 1953. The first printing of 4728 copies sold out within a month in the UK, many copies apparently going straight to libraries.
A second printing was immediately commissioned, but these had a Sunday Times review on the dust jacket flap and are far less desirable than the true first edition.
The book was originally sold for 10shillings and sixpence in 1953. In the 1980's a good copy could be bought for around R10 000 - currently copies sell for closer to R200 000.
Time has shown these books to certainly be a sound investment.

The Man with the Golden Gun

The other Bond novel that we have on offer is the even rarer, true first of The Man with the Golden Gun. This copy has the famous "golden gun" embossed on the front board. This was Fleming's second last Bond novel and by this stage he was a well known and successful author. The first print run of approximately 150 books were printed with the the embossed gun on the front board, but they were immediately recalled. Conflicting reasons were given for this. Either the embossing was oxidizing (though our copy shows no such thing), or the process was too expensive. A few books however had already been sent to the British colonies of Australia, New Zealand, Kenya and South Africa. Nobody is quite sure how many there are in existence, but the number is certainly very low. A second print run of 82 000 copies without the embossed gun was printed later in 1965 and these are often, incorrectly, thought to be the first edition of this title.
