PPP Runs Out of Funding

The Paycheck Protection Program ran out of funding Tuesday afternoon and has stopped accepting most new applications. This is four weeks before the program was slated to end. Around $8 billion is still available through community financial institutions. The SBA grant programs for businesses in the live-events and restaurant industries are continuing. A Clearer DC Reopening Plan?
Via the Washington City Paper. Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie wrote Mayor Muriel Bowser a letter on May 2 requesting a step-by-step reopening strategy. “It’s incredibly hard for businesses to sustain themselves when they’re forced to respond to ad hoc reopening announcements,” McDuffie says. He looks to states like Michigan, with clear reopening plans tied to the percentage of residents over the age of 16 who are vaccinated.

Labor: Job Growth Rate

Paychex | IHS Markit Small Business Employment Watch, filed a data report from over 350K clients. Some insights: The Small Business Jobs Index increased 4.33 percent from March to 98.34 in April, a positive indicator of job growth rate returning to pre-pandemic levels. The increase is in part driven by the comparison period of one year ago (detailed below). Each region, state, and metro area analyzed in April 2021 saw employment gains.
