Tonight: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
NoMa Summer Screen continues tonight, July 16, with The Perks of Being a Wallflower! Grab your friends, family, and a blanket and enjoy this free film under the stars at the Loree Grand Field (250 K Street, NE). Music, giveaways, food trucks, picnicking, and fun for all ages start at 7 PM. The film will start at sunset. The Perks of Being a Wallflower will be screened with subtitles. Coolers, children, and friendly (leashed) dogs are welcome.
 
Popped! Republic, Borinquen Lunch Box, The Big Cheese, Takorean, and Orange Cow will be vending on site starting at 7 PM.

Family Film Night: Updated Schedule
Join us on Tuesday, July 22 for a screening of The Lego Movie at Family Film Night! Free food and water courtesy of Harris Teeter will be provided for the first 100 people at 7 PM. This free outdoor movie series takes place in the plaza at L and First Streets, NW. Please note that this is a different location than the NoMa Summer Screen field. 

Due to the rain at last week's Family Film Night, the screening of Frozen has been rescheduled to Tuesday, August 19.

Rhythm in NoMa Lunchtime Concert

The last of this summer's Rhythm in NoMa lunchtime concerts is this Thursday, July 17. Come out to this free concert at Union Center Plaza (810-840 First Street, NE) from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM for the reggae music of Sam'O!

DC Scoop at Union Market Saturday
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream at the fourth annual DC Scoop on Saturday, July 19! Taste samples for free, or buy and savor a full scoop at this ice cream festival. DC Scoop will be held at Dock 5 (1309 Fifth Street, NE) at Union Market from 1-4 PM.

This year, DC Scoop is welcoming local ice cream vendors and even a few all-stars from around the country. Click here for the list of participating ice cream and savory food vendors.
Mid City East Small Area Plan
Give your feedback on the Mid City East Small Area Plan, a framework for conservation, development and connectivity in the neighborhoods of Bloomingdale, Eckington, LeDroit Park, Bates/Truxton Circle, Hanover, Sursum Corda and portions of Edgewood and Stronghold.

The DC Office of Planning (OP) will be accepting formal feedback from constituents until Tuesday, September 2. Public comments will be accepted in writing via email, U.S. mail, or in person at the Mid City East Mayoral Hearing on Tuesday, July 29 from 6:30-8:30 PM at The Summit (116 T Street, NE). All comments in writing should be directed to:

Prior to the hearing, the Office of Planning will host office hours on Wednesday, July 16 from 9-10:30 AM at the Big Bear Cafe (1700 First Street, NW) and on Thursday, July 24 from 4-6 PM at the Rustic Tavern (84 T Street, NW). The plan is available online for the public.
Ambassador Spotlight: Nazir Nura
Congratulations to Nazir Nura, for winning the Quarterly Ambassador Award! This achievement recognizes a NoMa Hospitality Ambassador each quarter who unfailingly goes above and beyond in all aspects of his work. Nazir joined the team in December 2012, and ever since has provided energetic assistance at NoMa events, exhibited a dependable work ethic, and continuously volunteered for new and bigger projects.

Prior to joining the NoMa BID and moving to D.C., Nazir immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia and worked several jobs. In 2013, Nazir became a US citizen. In celebration, the NoMa BID surprised Nazir with a party.
           
“They were so happy for me. I sent all of my family in Ethiopia pictures from that day,” Nazir said. In the future, Nazir hopes to continue his education and attend a community college.

NPR Documentary Screening
Head over to the NPR headquarters (1111 North Capitol Street, NE) on Tuesday, July 22 for a free screening of the film Herb and Dorothy 50x50NPR and the Arts Education Partnership have come together to host this event which will include a reception with complementary refreshments and a Q&A with museum panelists. The reception will begin at 5:30 PM, the film starts at 6:20 PM and the Q&A will follow. Reservations are required.

moveDC Public Comment Period Extended
DDOT is welcoming public comments on moveDC, a planning effort to develop a Multimodal Long Range Transportation plan for the District, until Thursday, July 31.

To review the plan, download an electronic version.  Printed copies are available at DDOT's office (55 M Street, SE) and the DDOT Public Space Permit Center (1100 Fourth Street, SW). You may also view the plan on CD-ROMs at DC Public Libraries. Submit your comments by filling out an online survey. Comments can also be emailed to colleen.hawkinson@dc.gov or mailed to 55 M Street, Fifth Floor, Washington DC 20003 to the attention of Colleen Hawkinson.
Running and Yoga Classes
Get active in NoMa this summer with one of many local fitness opportunities. Join the NoMa Run Group, do yoga on the Metropolitan Branch Trail, or bike to a brewery!

Running Group
  • Join the NoMa Run Group this Thursday, July 17 at 6 AM in front of the Starbucks at the corner of First and M Streets, NE. The group will start off with a light run before heading to the track to do some speed training for those looking to improve their PR.
  • "Bike and Beer Run" with Chocolate City Brewery. Start your bike or run interval at 9:30 AM or 7 PM on July 19 at the NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro Station (M Street side), and end at Chocolate City Brewery. Registration is free for Project Fitness DC members and $25 for non-members (price includes beer and a light snack after the run).
Free Yoga and Fitness Classes on the Metropolitan Branch Trail 
  • Tuesdays: Yoga with Crystal Moore in the mini park at Fourth and S Streets NE (at the trail intersection). Bring towel or mat. For more information, click here.
  • Thursdays: Fitness classes at Eighth and Edgewood Streets NE (at trail entrance near Chocolate City Beer) with Project Fitness. For more information, click here.
