Celebrating 60 years since the 1956 Melbourne Olympics

Explore our Olympics archives

On the 22nd of November 1956, Melbourne began its two week run as host city of the Olympic Games. It was the first time the Games were held in the Southern Hemisphere and the first in which all athletes walked the closing ceremony together.

We have many fantastic records from the 1956 Games including original plans, the City of Melbourne submission to hold the Games, and photographs.

Take a look at some of the items from our collection here.

You can also view pages from Melbourne's submissions to hold the games on
Mashable here.

And download our Olympics colouring book here.

Have you had a look at our test new website?

We'd love to hear what you think!

A test version of our new website has been available to view online since October.

One of the new features is the ability to search within a series directly through the website's topic pages.

Take a look at the 'wills and probates' page as an example.

We will be accepting feedback on the website design up until the end of December. Simply email us at feedback@prov.vic.gov.au
