New APA MN Online Forum

APA MN has a new discussion forum! It’s available on the APA MN website now. We’ve chosen Google Groups as a platform, since it’s fairly simple and intuitive to use. Anyone can view posts and replies, but only people with a Gmail account will be able to post. If you don’t have an account, it’s free and easy to set up – the site will walk you through the steps if needed.

We need you to help make this forum a success by:

  • Posting questions and replying to others (there are already a couple questions there now...)
  • Visiting periodically to check on new content
  • Letting other planners know about the forum

Let us know if you have any problems, questions, or suggestions.

Professional Development Officer

The Professional Development Officer has an integral position in the chapter and on the board. The PDO does much of the work putting together programs and getting those programs approved for AICP credit, as well as conducting sessions to help members pass the AICP exam. However, one of the PDO's, Rita Trapp, has submitted her resignation. More help is needed.

Jane Kansier and Elise Durbin, the other two PDO's, would like to find a third person to join the team. You may visit the website or contact either Jane or Elise to learn more about the position. We encourage all AICP planners to give thought to filling this important role.

FAICP Nominations

The call for nomination for the 2018 Class of the Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners is now open. To be eligible, individuals must have at least 15 years as members of AICP. If you have any nominations for potential FAICP members, or would like to serve on the FAICP Nominating Committee, contact Carissa by January 15, 2017.

APA MN Holiday Party

The annual APA MN Holiday Party will be held on January 18, 2017 in Minneapolis, after the holiday rush is over. To those of you who are interested in serving on the Conference Committee for 2017 in Mankato, mark your calendars!! The Kick-off meeting for Conference 2017 will be on Friday, January 6th, from 12-2 PM at the WSB offices in Golden Valley. Co-chairs Michael Palermo and Raya Esmaeili, who will be hosting this meeting, hope many of you will attend. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP your attendance to Raya. Come prepared with great ideas for a theme, tracks, sessions, and mobile tours. An agenda will follow later for those who indicate an interest.

Small Scale Manufacturing

Smart Growth America, in partnership with U.S. Economic Development Administration and Recast City, has announced a series of new, free technical assistance workshops designed to help communities incorporate small-scale manufacturing into their neighborhood revitalization work. Selected communities will receive a professionally facilitated two- to three-day workshop and a customized action plan that will outline how to leverage existing assets to make small scale manufacturing work toward their goals. Applications will be accepted until January 6, 2017.

Livable Conference Call for Papers

The 54th International Making Cities Livable Conference on Public Places for Community, Democracy, Health, and Equity has issued a call for papers. The conference will be held October 2-6, 2017, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Paper proposals are invited from elected officials, scholars and practitioners concerned with the following issues: Public Places for Community & Democratic Dialogue, Public Places for Health, and Public Places for Increasing Equity. The deadline is January 31, 2017.

A new APA resource collects background resources and how-to guidance on integrating health issues into policies and regulations that help shape the built environment. This extensive compilation includes examples of ordinances that have successfully assimilated public health into planning and zoning documents and regulations.
