Time to Vote

The 2014 APA Minnesota Chapter election is underway. The positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Student Representative are for two-year terms (2015-2016). Additionally, proposed Bylaws amendments are up for members' consideration. You can find both the candidate position statements and the proposed Bylaws amendments on the Chapter's website. Please submit your ballot no later than 5:00 PM on Sunday, December 21, 2014. Should you have any questions or problems accessing the ballot webpage, please contact Lynn Jorgenson.

Help Plan the Future of APA

APA’s Development Plan and Budget Committee, chaired by APA President-Elect Carol Rhea, FAICP, invites members to apply their skills toward developing a comprehensive, long-term plan for the association’s growth and progress. APA MN Holiday Party

Mark your calendars for the APA holiday party. It will be held January 15, 2015, at Jax Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis, tentative time 5:00-7:30 PM. Stay tuned for an upcoming email with more details.


Great Places Initiative

The second annual Great Places Initiative program and celebration will be held December 10, 5-8 PM at Hopkins Center for the Arts. This year the program will feature Don Shelby, who has a great passion for great places. Each nomination will be featured in a video clip prepared by students of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. APA MN is a co-host of this event. Register online for this event.


Resilient Communities RFP

The Resilient Communities Project (RCP) is now accepting proposals from cities and counties to be the community partner for 2015–2016. RCP is a year-long partnership between the University of Minnesota and one local community in Minnesota. Through the partnership, students and faculty from across the University collaborate with the partner community to address its self-defined sustainability-related needs through course-based projects. The collaboration results in on-the-ground impact and momentum for a community working toward a more sustainable and livable future. Deadline for proposals: February 13, 2015 at 4:30 pm
 

Need Law and Ethics Credits?

The AICP CM reporting period deadline is approaching – the current period ends December 31, 2014. If you still need law or ethics credits, free distance education sessions are currently available through the Planning Webcast Series Consortium: The State of Takings after Koontz (1.5 CM Law) and Ethical Rules and Considerations for Planners, Plan Commissioners and Lawyers (1.5 CM Ethics).
 

Public Sector Innovation Seminar

The Humphrey School's 2014 Public Sector Innovation Seminar will be held December 5, 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM. This seminar will feature a keynote speaker and multiple breakout workshops on public sector innovation- how do you collaborate, what is the media interest, what type of leadership is needed, etc. To register, visit the event website.
 

Healthy Planning Coalitions RFP

APA has received funding from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), allowing APA to support local coalitions in efforts to reduce chronic disease in communities across the United States. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to improve the capacity of planning and public health professionals to advance community-based strategies. A request for proposals is now available for potential participants. The letter of intent deadline is December 2. Complete proposals are due December 22.
 

Housing and Smart Growth Webinar

The Florida chapter of the APA is sponsoring a free webinar entitled “Meeting Local Housing Needs with Smart Growth Tools in 2014” on December 3, 12:00-1:30 PM. This webinar is designed to help you make the case for implementing the most effective smart growth policies for ensuring that your community has an adequate supply of housing for the continuum of need: from workforce housing to seniors who need help to age in place. National Flood Insurance Webinar

The upstate New York chapter of the APA is sponsoring a free webinar entitled “Recent Changes to the National Flood Insurance Program: What can a planner do?” on December 5, 12:00-1:30 PM.  This webinar will review some of these changes and outline steps that planners can take to mitigate present and future impacts of the new law. Urban Excellence Award

The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence (RBA) seeks to promote innovative thinking about the built environment and advance conversation about making cities better. The national award discovers and celebrates urban places that are distinguished by quality design along with their social and economic contributions to our nation's cities. Applications are now being accepted for the 2015 awards, and are due December 9.
 

Freight Flow Study

A new study from the Brookings Institution analyzes international and domestic freight flow data from 2010. The report shows patterns and concentrations in commodity trade between major metropolitan areas and other global destinations. The study includes information about the Twin Cities region, along with other major metropolitan areas.
 

Gender and Aging Research

Take approximately 10 minutes to support the Planning and Women Division’s efforts to gauge the attitudes and practices of planners with respect to women and aging by participating in an online survey. This collaborative effort with Cornell University is part of a broader Divisions Council “Aging & Livable Communities” initiative and is an important contribution to the growing discussion about gender and planning.
