2013 APA MN Elections

APA MN is seeking candidates for the Board elections. This year, APA MN members may run for District Director in the district in which they are employed or in which they reside. In addition, the offices of Citizen Planner Director and of Student Representative are open. Each position is a two-year term, and the new Directors will take office on January 1, 2014. Please submit your Director candidacy for the 2014-2015 Board or the Student Representative position to the APA MN Administrators at mnapa@buffleheadweb.net by October 15, 2013.

Interested candidates must submit a bio (2-3 paragraphs), contact information, and a photo with their nomination. In addition, you may request a copy of the position description by contacting the administrators. Elections will be facilitated by National APA in early December. The APA MN Board would also encourage interested candidates to receive their employer’s support before committing to a two-year term. If you would like to know more about these positions, please feel free to contact Breanne Rothstein, APA MN President, at 763-231-4863 or via email at brothstein@wsbeng.com. On behalf of the APA MN Board, we hope you consider running for one of these rewarding positions.

Thank You!

After a highly successful Upper Midwest Planners Conference in Rochester last month, the APA Minnesota Board would like to say thank you to the many members and non-members who worked so hard to make the event a success. The large number of attendees can attest to the fact that we had educational and interesting sessions; thank you to the presenters and mobile tour guides, and in particular, the Keynote Speakers, Ron Sims and Chris Leinberger. Of course, the conference would not be possible without the sponsors and exhibitors who support all of our events, so a special thanks to them. In addition, the attendees from Minnesota were given the opportunity to meet counterparts from Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and the Dakotas--and especially noted were the many students from both the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the University of Iowa.

Most importantly, the event would not occur without the hard work of the Conference Committee--thanks to all of them, especially the Program Chairs, the Awards Chair, and the Events and Mobile Tours Chairs. Finally, the Board would like to thank the Conference Chairs, Lance Bernard and Melissa Poehlman, for an outstanding conference and for their unflagging determination, energy, and enthusiasm throughout the many months of planning this event. Kudos to them for a job well done!!! A full article with pictures of the conference will run in the November newsletter.

2014 APA MN Conference in Duluth

The Upper Midwest Planners Conference last month in Rochester was a huge success. We counted 416 registered participants, attended excellent sessions and mobile tours, and enjoyed fun social events and beautiful weather. However, we no sooner finish one conference than we must begin planning another. Next year, the APA Minnesota State Conference will be in Duluth at the DECC. We would like to put together the Conference Committee as soon as possible, so we can begin to identify session topics and tracks, events, and tours for 2014. The planners in Duluth are very excited to be hosting this event and have already been meeting to suggest events. If you are interested in joining the Conference Committee, please send a note to the administrators at mnapa@buffleheadweb.net by October 4. We hope to organize the first meeting of the Conference Committee in December. Thanks in advance for your interest in the 2014 Conference.

Public actions can dramatically increase the dollar value of private land. While local governments seek to capture a portion of that value to address various needs, planners often don’t know how to determine if a given request is reasonable. This session shows how to calculate the increase in value of private land due to public actions and develop a reasonable figure for developer contributions.
