Save the Date

Put the dates on your calendar! The 2014 APA Minnesota State Conference will be in Duluth, October 1-3, at the DECC. We have a wonderful variety of General Sessions scheduled at the conference, along with a venue filled with Mobile Tours, Keynote Speakers, and other events. Lodging will be available at three of the hotels - the Holiday Inn, the Hampton Inn, and the Inn on Lake Superior. Further details will be available in the July newsletter and on the website in July. Plan ahead for an exciting three days in Duluth.


 

World's Fair Brown Bag

On June 26th, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie will share a presentation concerning the plan to bring the World Fair to Minnesota in 2023. The Brown Bag will occur 12 noon - 1 PM at the Roseville City Hall. Please RSVP your attendance to Matt Parent
 


New Urban Street Design Guide

A new set of guidelines is now available to help planners design 21st century urban city streets. The Urban Street Design Guide, developed by the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), is a resource to help make streets safer, more livable, and more economically vibrant. Key local partners for this project include The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Hennepin County, the City of Minneapolis, and the City of Saint Paul. The Urban Street Design Guide is available on the NACTO website.

 

Housing Summit

The 6th Annual Housing Summit, sponsored by ULI Minnesota and other partners, will be held June 5, from 7:30-11:00 AM at the Hopkins Center for the Arts in Hopkins, MN. The theme will be Designing Great Neighborhoods: Compact, Walkable, With a Mix of Uses. The program will include keynote speaker Julie Campoli, the founder of TerraFirma Urban Designs and the author of Made for Walking and Visualizing Density, followed by a panel discussion. Sustainable Cities Tour

Join colleagues on this first-hand, behind the scenes visit to some of the most cutting-edge and celebrated eco-city developments in Europe. Economic Development Webinar

The APA Economic Development Division is sponsoring a free webinar entitled “Retail, Race and Regional Economic Development in Chicago’s Southern Suburbs” on June 6 from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. The webinar will summarize findings of a two year Retail Investment Study conducted in the south suburbs of Chicago that examined reasons, including race, for the lack of Class A retail and restaurant establishments in local communities. Sustainable Landscape Webinar

The APA Florida Chapter is sponsoring a free webinar entitled “Planners and Planters - What planners need to know about creating a sustainable landscape for today and tomorrow” on June 20 from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. This webinar is designed to inform planners on the benefits of landscaping to promote sustainability and redevelopment and then how to get this message out to developers, home owners and the community. The APA New Jersey Chapter is sponsoring a free webinar entitled “Health Impact Assessments” on June 27 from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. 311 for Cities Launched

In late May, the Obama Administration announced the launch of the National Resource Network, a pilot program designed to serve as a "311 for Cities." The program will allow communities nationwide to connect to a network of private and public sector experts that will provide local governments with strategic help on key economic issues and aid the turnaround of local economies. Pedestrian Accident Data

Also in May, Smart Growth America released Dangerous by Design 2014, taking a look at where pedestrian fatalities happen and who is most at risk, presenting data from every county, metro area, and state. The study’s website includes an interactive map showing the distribution of fatalities, as well as analysis of trends.
