FAICP Honor for Phil Wheeler

Phil Wheeler has been selected as part of the 2014 Class of the Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP). FAICP is the highest professional honor in the planning field. FAICP members are identified as model planners who have made significant contributions to planning and society. Phil was nominated by the APA MN chapter and will be inducted as Fellow at the APA Conference this April in Atlanta. Phil recently retired from the Rochester Olmsted Planning Department following over 37 years of service, where he served as Planning Director since 1990. Phil's distinguished career is characterized by a continual pursuit of innovation. Please join us in congratulating Phil Wheeler on this important honor.

Planners' Day at the Capitol

Please join us for APA-MN's 2014 Planners' Day at the Capitol on Friday, April 4. The program will begin at 1:30pm in House Room 400 North of the State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. It will include presentations from Charlie Vander Aarde with Metro Cities and Paul Mandell with the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board, as well as updates from the Legislative and Law Committee on current legislation and recent case law. The event will be followed by a social gathering at the Great Waters Brewing Company at 3:30pm. CM credit, including law credit, applied for. Watershed Event

Set to take place at Mill City Museum on Friday, April 11th, in partnership with Floodplain Collective and the UMN Department of Landscape Architecture, this event will bring together water-focused leaders within agriculture, design, science, activism, and policy, to share knowledge, ideas, and strategies to build a future for how we use and value water. Panelist discussions, audience engagement, and a premier film-screening will catalyze new dialogue and action to improve the quality and quantity of Minnesota’s water. Planning for Climate Change

The Regional & Intergovernmental Planning Division is sponsoring a free webinar entitled “Is Your State Resilient? Planning for Climate Change” on Friday, April 11, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM. The webinar focuses on plans, policies and laws that address the impacts of climate change on the state level. Presenters include climate change policy experts from California, Maryland and Florida sharing their work on how forward-thinking state policies can alleviate the impacts of climate change. APA MN Planning Awards

The Annual APA-Minnesota Chapter Planning Awards are an exciting opportunity to give credit to outstanding projects and to people who have contributed to the planning profession. The awards will be given at the APA-MN Annual Planning Conference on October 1-3, 2014. Nomination materials are available here. The deadline for non-student award submittal is May 30. Outstanding Student Project and Gunnar Isberg Scholarship deadline is June 1.

IEDC Spring Conference

From a vibrant collection of start-ups to super-sized international companies such as General Mills, 3M, United Health Group, U.S. Bank and Cargill, Greater Minneapolis-Saint Paul has spread its bets over a rich range of businesses and industries. The 2014 International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Spring Conference will analyze trends in existing and emerging industries, while demonstrating how communities and regions can support, attract, and retain diverse sources of cluster-based activity amidst a changing global economic development landscape. Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning Webinar

The Delaware Chapter of the APA is sponsoring a free webinar on Friday, April 4, 2014 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM entitled “Promoting Active Communities Through Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning.” In this panel presentation, professional planners will address the challenges and successes they have had with a wide range of projects, including the creation of an urban river walk, the development of a regional bicycle plan, addressing the active transportation needs of a suburban high school, and planning for a mixed-use trail connecting two municipalities. Downtown Planning for Smaller Communities

The Wisconsin Chapter of the APA is sponsoring a free webinar on Friday, April 25, 2014 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM entitled “Downtown Master Planning for Smaller Communities (20K & Under): A Market Driven Approach.” This presentation will describe an approach to economic development planning suitable for small and mid-sized communities. Presenters will discuss key trends impacting small & mid-size communities, with a focus on retail, housing, and the growing importance of the Central Social District and its role in downtown revitalization.
