APA MN Conference 2016

Members, save the date!! Conference Committee 2016 has met for the first time to begin the planning for the state conference, which this year will also be the Upper Midwest Conference, on September 28-30 in St. Cloud. Watch the website and emails for information about the RFP for session proposals for Conference 2016, which will be posted about February 15. Hope to see you all in September.

Land Use Law Lunch Series

Join Land Use Attorney & Planner Cynthia Kirchoff on the second Wednesday of the month to discuss the latest cases, ideas, and news about land use, planning, and zoning law.  Each month Cynthia will be presenting or hosting a different topic. Bring your lunch and join the discussion at this free monthly event! 2016 Winter Cycling Congress

The international Winter Cycling Congress is coming to the Twin Cities, February 2-4, 2016. This three-day professional development conference offers opportunities to learn best practices about winter-specific bicycle and pedestrian planning, develop contacts from around the world and earn AICP credit. Topics vary and include innovative maintenance techniques, designing facilities for winter, counting techniques that incorporate weather and much more. Pre-registration is now closed, but day-of-registration will be available at the Conference.
 

Resilience Capacity Index

One way to assess a region’s resilience is by its qualities to cope with future challenges, a concept called resilience capacity. The Resilience Capacity Index (RCI) is a single statistic summarizing a region’s score on 12 equally weighted indicators—four indicators in each of three dimensions encompassing Regional Economic, Socio-Demographic, and Community Connectivity attributes. Based on the RCI, most Minnesota regions ranked “very high” in terms of resilience.
 

Planning Commission Webinar

A free online webinar sponsored by AICP is now available, entitled Effectively Communicating with the Planning Commission. The webinar is conducted by Esri and the City of Philadelphia Planning Commission. Smart Growth America has recently released a new report on downtown revitalization. (Re)Building Downtown: A Guidebook for Revitalization is a resource for local elected officials who want to re-invigorate and strengthen neighborhood centers of economy, culture, and history through a smart growth approach to development. 
 

Central Social District Webinar

The Wisconsin Chapter of the APA is sponsoring a free webinar entitled The Central Social District - the Key to Tomorrow's Successful Downtown on Friday, March 4, 2016 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM. This webinar will explain how the concept of the central social district (CSD) can be used as a planning tool to integrate new approaches into downtown in a smart, strategic way. If you have not earned all 32 CM credits for 2014–15 (including 1.5 each in law and ethics), you have until April 30, 2016, to earn and log as many as you need. 
 

Fair Housing Webinar

The Housing and Community Development Division of the APA is sponsoring a free webinar entitled Fair Housing: Serious Responsibility, Serious Liability on Friday, February 19, 2016 12:00-1:30 PM. This session will review significant changes in Federal Fair Housing requirements that occurred in 2015. Topics include the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the Federal Fair Housing Act, HUD’s new rule on Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing, and the implementation of the rule through the Assessment of Fair Housing template. CM | Pending
 

Award-Winning Sustainability Webinar

The Sustainable Communities Division of the APA is sponsoring a free webinar entitled Award-Winning Sustainability on Friday, February 26, 2016 12:00-1:30 PM. Winning isn’t everything, but we can often learn a lot from plans, programs, and projects that have been deemed worthy of an award. In this session, speakers representing four winners of SCD’s 2015 Awards for Excellence in Sustainability will demonstrate how communities can function more sustainably. CM | 1.5 
 

Transit Explorer

The Transport Politic has released a new online interactive tool called the Transit Explorer. This tool allows users to discover current, planned, and potential fixed-guideway transit systems in North America – including the Twin Cities region.
