APA MN Conference: Looking Forward


Members, we wish to say thank you to all who attended the state conference in Bemidji last week. It was a truly enjoyable and educational event, and we thank all those who participated in and planned the conference. Now, we are looking forward to the conference for 2016, which will be held September 28-30, in St. Cloud. If any of you are interested in joining the 2016 Conference Committee, as a member or committee chair, please send indication of your interest to the APA MN office. Thank you in advance for contributing your time and talents to the APA MN State Planning Conference.

Metro District Director Nominations

Have you ever considered volunteering to contribute to the local chapter of the American Planning Association? Or do you know of a chapter member who would make a good Board member? If so the APA MN board has a metro district director vacancy that we are looking to fill through appointment. Please send an email expressing your interest in this appointment or the name of the person you are suggesting, and we will follow up for additional info. This open solicitation will remain in effect through October 21, 2015, with the plan to appoint a new board member for the November Board meeting.  Check out our website to learn more about the board. Mid-day Streetcar Forum

Members, please join us for a Mid-day Forum on October 14, 2015 from 12:00-1:00 PM, entitled “Minneapolis Modern Streetcar,” presented by Nathan Koster and Charleen Zimmer.  The forum will be held at the offices of the City of Roseville, 2661 Civic Center Drive. Planning Panel and Social Hour

The American Planning Association-Minnesota Chapter (APA) & Planning Student Organization (PSO) are hosting an event on October 8, 2015, for students to hear from practitioners about local planning careers and participate in a fun social hour! Part 1: 4:00-5:30 pm at Carlson School L-118.  A panel of professionals will discuss their background, career path, and current work. Part 2: 5:30-7:00 pm at Town Hall Brewing.  Join us after the panel for a social hour and informal networking.  Register online
 

Phil Carlson Nominated for FAICP

Phil Carlson has been nominated as a potential FAICP member by the APA MN board. Phil has had a long and distinguished career with both long-term consulting relationships with communities and extensive experience with the preparation and implementation of comprehensive plans. He is currently employed by Stantec. The board will be working on submitting an application on behalf of him to APA National, for induction into the FAICP. 
 

Upper Midwest Planning Conference

Registration for the Upper Midwest Planning Conference is open through October 5, 2015. The conference, themed “Adaptive Planning – New Solutions for Changing Times,” will be held October 12-13, 2015, at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison, WI. 
 

APA Iowa Conference

Registration for the 2015 APA Iowa Conference is open through October 7, 2015. The conference, themed “Reinvest, Reimagine, Retain: Planning for Future Generations,” will be held October 14-16, 2015, at the Sioux City Convention Center, Sioux City, IA. 
 

National Community Planning Month

October is National Community Planning month. Visit the APA national website for more information about ways to celebrate and get the word out.
 

Health and Development Review

In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Planning and Community Health Center created a set of guidelines to incorporate health into the Conceptual Review process for development projects.
 

Smart Growth Technical Assistance

Each year Smart Growth America offers a limited number of these workshops at no charge, and applications are now open for our 2016 free technical assistance workshops. Visit the Smart Growth America website to learn about this year’s opportunity. Applications are due by Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 5:00 PM EDT.
 

The Dating Game

Sometimes the relationship between Developer and Public Agencies can be like a blind date gone bad...or it can mean a lot of Getting to Know You!  Join SLUC for an entertaining but serious look at the variety of opinions and issues raised when one developer dates three cities and one city dates three developers.  This forum will be held October 28, 2015, from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM in St Louis Park. Real-Time Map of Air Pollution

The World Air Quality Index is a new interactive mapping tool that shows air pollution in cities across the world, including smaller cities where available. Compiled from thousands of government sources, it shows variations in air quality around the nation and world.

Big Data and Small Communities Webinar

The APA Idaho Chapter is sponsoring a free webinar entitled Big Data and Small Communities: Opportunities and Challenges on October 2 at 12:00-1:30 PM. Nowadays a wide variety of data is easily accessible for anybody to use. But how reliable is this data and can we really use it to inform planning decisions? Aging-in-Community Webinar

The APA Private Practice Division is sponsoring a free webinar entitled APA’s New Aging-in-Community Programs on October 16 at 12:00-1:30 PM. While aging in place enables older adults to live at home independently, Aging in Community promotes social capital with systems of support and caring to maximize one’s ability to remain at home in their community. APA has developed a toolkit to help planners and public officials to address the unprecedented challenges of aging communities. CM | 1.5
 

Public Involvement in Transportation Planning Webinar

The APA Transportation Planning Division is sponsoring a free webinar entitled Public Involvement for Transportation Planning on October 21 at 12:00-1:30 PM.
