Vacancies at the IES

The Institute for European Studies (IES) is calling for:

  • one full-time doctoral researcher in Environment and Sustainable Development
  • one full-time doctoral researcher in Migration and Diversity
  • one full-time doctoral research in International Security
  • and a pre-Doc researcher on Migration Governance in West Africa (for UNU-CRIS)

IES leads new H2020 project - EU-DRONES, accepted under Marie Curie Actions

A new project, EU-DRONES, has been accepted in H2020 under the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions. Dr. Chantal Lavallée, who obtained an Individual Fellowship for 2 years, has joined the IES, working alongside Prof. Christian Kaunert. The objective of this research is to examine how the European Commission is shaping regulatory framework development, production and use of drones considering the diverging interests among actors concerned in Europe (and beyond) where multiple authorities overlap.

Mr. Tran Van Thuy successfully defends PhD thesis

We are very proud to announce the promotion of Doctor in Law Tran Van Thuy, who successfully defended his PhD thesis on 22 March, with Prof. Dr. Erik Franckx as promotor. The title of his PhD thesis is: “Freedom of Navigation in the Exclusive Economic Zone: the EU Approach with Respect to Ship-Source Pollution”. Dr. Thuy started his research in 2009 when he joined the Institute for European Studies. The IES would like to congratulate Dr. Tran Van Thuy for this great accomplishment!

IES Professor Florian Trauner participates in joint VUB-ULB mission to China

From 7 to 15 April, IES Professor Florian Trauner will participate in a joint VUB-ULB mission to China led by the rectors of both universities. The objective is to foster closer cooperation on the exchange of students and researchers with Chinese partner universities including Renmin University of Beijing and Fudan University in Shanghai.

Call for Participants: Sixth Doctoral School on Latin, American, European and Comparative Regionalism

Our partner institute UNU-CRIS has launched a Call for Participants regarding its Sixth Doctoral School on Latin, American, European and Comparative Regionalism. The Doctoral School will take place in Quito (Ecuador) and will last for one week. Candidates should submit before 30 June 2017.

Public guest lectures - New approaches to Diplomacy

IES Senior Researcher Prof. Luk Van Langenhove organises a series of guest lectures on ‘New Approaches to Diplomacy’ in the context of his VUB course ‘Current Case Studies: Global and Regional Governance’. The lecturers will be practitioners and academics who will discuss non-traditional forms of diplomacy such as economic and cultural diplomacy. Lectures take place in the IES offices in Brussels on Wednesdays from 4:00 – 6:00PM and are open to the public. The first lecture is scheduled for 19 April.

The Virtuosi

As a part of his Jean Monnet Chair rECOncile, IES professor Harri Kalimo has launched a novel type of academic activity at the IES: the virtual reading circle “Virtuosi”. The circle hosts a group of pre- and post-doctoral scholars from universities in different countries –so far Ghent and Antwerp have joined the IES in Belgium, while Turku and Tampere universities participate from Finland, and Fordham from the United States. In addition, IES associates that work in the EU institutions, law firms and national representations take part in the discussions. The seminars take place virtually as group webinars.
