Online Summer School on EU Policy Making

Considering the initial interest in the Summer School on EU Policy Making, and in consultation with the summer school partners in Vienna, the IES has decided to offer the summer school in synchronous online format during the same period 6th to 17th July 2020.

Summer school lectures will be live-streamed and provide for interaction between participants and lecturers through coordinated online group work. Similar to past editions of the summer school, a simulation exercise on EU decision-making will be organised and high-level speakers from the EU and international institutions will be invited to share their expertise and experiences. As a result of saved costs due to not meeting in person, and saving on travel and subsistence costs that are normally included in the price, we are able to charge a lower tuition fee.

In collaboration with the United Nations University, the IES is also involved in its Summer School on Modern Diplomacy, scheduled to take place on 24 August – 3 September 2020. More about this summer school on cris.unu.edu/summerschools.

EUIA20 Conference Postponed for 2021

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic and in line with Belgium’s federal government restrictions, the EUIA organising team and the partner institutions have decided, with much regret, to postpone the EUIA20 conference for one year, to May 26-28, 2021.

Given that more than 400 colleagues have already proposed or reviewed papers and panels, the existing paper selection will be maintained. In view of the altered circumstances, authors will be allowed to bring their papers and panels up to date. A decision on whether to issue a supplementary call for Papers will be made in due course.

IES to Take Delegation of Top Students to EuroSim 2021 in the US

EuroSim is an annual international simulation of the EU bringing together over 200 students and faculty from more than 20 colleges and universities in the US and Europe. As an active member and a host of this event in 2018 in Belgium, the Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will select and sponsor 10 students across its LLM in International and European Law, Advanced Master in European Integration, and Postgraduate Certificate in EU Policy Making programmes of the 2020-21 academic year, to become a part of its delegation for EuroSim 2021 in the US, provided of course that the COVID-19 measures at that time will allow us to do so.

Participation in EuroSim offers our students a unique opportunity to learn in an exciting multicultural environment. In addition, by bringing American and European students together, EuroSim provides students with first-hand experience in transatlantic relations.
