BIRDS IN ART MEMBERS' RECEPTION

Many flocked to the Museum for the Members' reception held on July 6th for the exemplary show, Birds in Art. This renowed traveling exhibition features 60 artists and is organized by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconson. This popular exhibition was last hosted here in 2005. The reception was a great kick off to an exciting new season! The generosity of Museum members and a $5,000 grant from the Hattie A. and Fred C. Lynam Trust made it possible for Birds in Art to roost at the Gilley Museum.

EARLY BIRD GETS THE WOODPECKER?

This is our fun new way to start the day! The first person, couple, or family to arrive at the museum each day gets the honor of positioning the two Hairy Woodpeckers that "inhabit" the sculpture "Secondary Growth," by Don Rambadt. One never knows where those birds will end up!  The sculpture was part of the 2010 exhibition, Forged Into Flight. It remains as a welcoming gateway to the Museum thanks to generous donations by members and the artist.

FOOD FOR WORMS

That famous epitaph belongs to Benjamin Franklin and now carvers are having a grand time creating their own with a crow on a tombstone. Our carver-in-residence Steve Valleau has added this novel bird to his Introduction to Carving starter kits. A local 5th grade class had lots to “crow” about when they worked on this bird this winter.  See the "graveyard" from the class on our Facebook page and "like" us while you are there.

ONCE UPON A FLAMINGO

The pink birds will be front and center again for the Quietside Festival and Parade on Saturday July 16th. With a fairytale like theme the Museum will “royally” celebrate our 30th anniversary with a float and surprises for the spectators. Come join us to be added to our court!  Be sure to call in advance if you want to be in the parade with us.
