Organizing Ideas and Tips

Spring Organizing!

I’m not sure where the idea of “spring cleaning” came from, but Wikipedia suggests there are roots in many different cultures.  And even though we don’t have the cold winter here in California, I think that as the flowers are blooming and winter has come to an end it does feel like a good time to refresh our home and our surroundings.  Cleaning up the clutter and giving ourselves a fresh start for the summer and the rest of the year ahead is a great idea.

So, before you start your Spring cleaning, I suggest that you do a bit of Spring organizing too!  This will help make it easier to clean afterwards.

Where do we start?  This is often the most difficult part. Break it up into easy steps that feel do-able to you.  Start with one pile or one drawer.  Maybe tackle one step a day or one step a week.  This makes it all seem less overwhelming and actually gives you a sense of accomplishment as you complete each small step.

If you are a visual person, write the steps down.  Then you get the pleasure of crossing them off your list as you go.  You can also delegate steps to other people in your household.

Now start.  Just do it!

A few other tips:

  • Start with the room where you spend the most time.

  • Pick a time of day that you feel the most motivated to work.  If you are tired at night, don’t wait until then to start your organizing for the day.

  • Take the time to organize in a way that will make it easier next time.

  • Put on some music and get in the organizing groove!

  • If you have a day that you just can’t do it, give yourself a break.  It can wait until tomorrow.

You will feel a wonderful sense of calm and peace with your organized home, and your spring cleaning will be a breeze!

Before and After

Garage

Before
This is the garage of a single family home that has accumulated years of family treasures and items that are no longer needed or wanted.  The floor was completely packed, and the cupboards were full.

After
After 2 days of work, 4 trash and recycling cans, 4 trips to the Goodwill, 2 trips to toxic waste disposal, and half of a truck-load to Habitat for Humanity Restore and Recycling, my client and I cleared everything off the floor, re-organized the cupboards, and he now has a great garage in which to work or even to park his car!

QuickBooks

If you are a small business owner or a solopreneur, it is important to keep your business books up to date, and really important to make this process as simple and easy as possible.  My recommendation is to use an accounting program like Quicken or QuickBooks.  Depending on your size and needs there is a version that is right for you, and it should save you time and money.  Let me know if I can answer any questions on what would work best for you.

You don't have to steal

Dairy Crates

I was trying to think of a new and fun product for you today, but instead I am highlighting an old favorite.  Nothing is quite as nice as a strong versatile dairy crate.  They work in your tool cabinet or even to stand on for a little extra height.  I like to store shoes or boots in them in my coat closet so they can be sorted by person.  Only $9.99 each, and handy to have around.
