Organizing Ideas and Tips

Top Ten Products of 2014

December is a big shopping month, so why not put some useful products on your shopping list to give as gifts this holiday season!
Here are my top 10 favorite products, and my thoughts on who on your list would appreciate them!
#10 - Bevara Sealing Clip
These clips are great for anyone who works in the kitchen.  These little colorful clips make it so easy to open and close all those bags and packages that we open every day.  I use them for everything from bread bags to frozen food bags.  You can find them at Ikea for only $2.99 for 20 clips.

#9 - Fridge Binz
Another gift for someone who enjoys an organized kitchen.  These bins are a great way to organize food items in your refrigerator and freezer, as well as to make cleanup easier. They are strong and stackable, and with handles they are easy to handle.  I also like using them in the pantry.  They range from $7.99 to $19.99, and can be purchased at many stores like Amazon or The Container Store.

#8 - Fellowes Powershred W-11C 11 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder
For someone you know who is security conscious and good about getting rid of paper, a shredder is a great gift.  This Fellowes is the best.  It is cross-cut and shreds up to 11 sheets at a time.  It even takes staples and credit cards.  This shredder usually runs around $70 at Amazon.

#7 - Brother Label Maker
This gift is perfect for someone who likes to organize.  These label makers are easy to use, and make nice, neat, easy-to-read labels.  I like the Brother line of label makers.  You can get a very simple one, or one with many more options like the one shown above.  The labels are washable, and can easily be removed when you want to re-label.  The one pictured runs $37.49 at  Look at the whole line and decide which is right for you.  Some can print from your computer, some have AC adapters, and most offer many different sizes of tape.

#6 - elfa
This is a bigger gift, but could be perfect for your loved one.  The elfa systems at The Container Store are so easy to design (by yourself or with a designer in the store), and are great for closets, pantry, or even garages.  They are very strong, easy to install, and they look great.  They are lower priced than custom cabinets, but more than some other modular shelving.  You can give a gift certificate and then wait until their regular 30% off sale in January.

#5 - Hanging Folders
Who would want a gift of office supplies?  I would!  You can really tell a quality difference when you use the Pendaflex® hanging folders.  They are reinforced, and made from quality paper.  They come in a variety of colors for quick identification.  I find the best prices for these at Amazon.

#4 - External Hard Drive
Anyone with a computer could use an extra external hard drive.  Why not give the gift that allows your loved ones to preserve their memories.  The best way to create the local back-up of your digital photos is on an external hard drive.  There are many hard drives out there, with a wide range of sizes and prices.  I like the Seagate drives as well as LaCie drives.  I always have a couple of the small portable drives around for a quick back-up or to move files between computers.  Also a larger desktop version is great for your regular computer back-up.  This Seagate is $64 at Amazon for the 1 TB.

#3 - Hangers
Someone that loves clothes and treats them well, would really appreciate these great hangers. The Container Store’s version is called the Huggable Hangers®.  This is a nice strong hanger that will keep your clothes from slipping off in your closet, and they are so thin that they really create extra room in your closet!  They cost about $1.00 each, although less at CostCo if you are a member.

#2 - LegacyBox
For people who love their photos, and want to protect them, this is the best storage box available today.  I love the new LegacyBox.  It is a beautiful, archival box made of lignin-free materials to keep your photos safe. The LegacyBox comes with interior boxes to organize your photos and a large envelope on the underside of the lid.  Call or email me to order your box today!  Each large box holds 2400 photos and costs $69.95.

#1 - Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500
The scanner is in my #1 position because it is the product I use more than anything else.  Anyone who struggles with too much paper will love the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner for Mac or PC. It is fast and easy and creates beautiful high-resolution document scans.  It takes 50 pages at a time, all sizes and shapes in the same load, and it self-straightens papers as they go in. It scans double-sided and very fast (25 pages per minute color scanning). It lists for $495, and you can get it for $420 at Amazon.

Make your gift giving functional this year with one of these great products!
Happy Holidays.
