Newsletter RUG alumni chapter New York
- March, 2015
Four years ago, the Ubbo Emmius Fund of the University of Groningen founded the alumni chapter New York. The aim: reach out to Groningen alumni in the big apple and give them the chance to meet and mingle far away from Groningen. The chapter has now grown into an solid network with an active board of alumni volunteers that organizes several activities each year. On Friday the 13th of March the alumni chapter had their latest reception - without any bad luck!
RUG delegates and alumni meet in New York
A small University of Groningen delegation visited the alumni chapter in New York on March 13th. Alumnus Mirko van den Winkel, executive vice-president of Moroso USA was so kind to host the informal reception at the beautiful Moroso showroom in SoHo. All three Board members of the New York Chapter were present, as were about 25 RUG alumni from the Netherlands and other countries.

The RUG delegation informed the alumni about some of the many changes that our university has undergone in the past few years, and the changes that are about to happen, such as the University of Groningen campus Fryslân. They invited the graduates to come back to Groningen, and to give talks and testimonials.

Stay active
A few recent graduates suggested that they would be most willing to mentor young students or recent graduates like themselves. Others mentioned the possibility to host RUG interns. Some said they intended to send their offspring to Groningen for a high-quality education, and they took some of the RUG materials that were displayed.

The RUG delegation would like to thank the board members and all alumni for the most cordial welcome and atmosphere. It was a pleasure to be there!
Recap 2014
In 2014, New York alumni were invited to kick off the New Year together and meet the Rector Magnificus Prof. Elmer Sterker in February. In November, alumni were welcomed by RUG alumnus and CEO Heineken USA Dolf van der Brink at the Heineken USA headquarters in New York.

Moreover, the alumni chapter organized a fundraiser for the important research of RUG top institute European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing (ERIBA). This dinner in March, also attended  by the President of the University of Groningen Prof. Sibrand Poppema, led to the amazing support of $50.000 for healthy ageing research of the University of Groningen. Healthy Ageing is one of the three focus areas of the University of Groningen.

We would like to thank all alumni for their engagement and support, with special thanks to Brunhilde, Eveline and Ruurd.
