Recap RUG Alumni Dinner Jakarta
- May, 2015
While the Dutch were recovering from celebrating Kingsday in their orange outfits, RUG alumni and visiting Dutch students came together in Jakarta on April 30th. Despite the heavy traffic, that kept some alumni from attending, RUG students and alumni sat down for a great dinner. It was the second official event after launching the RUG Alumni Chapter Jakarta last November.
RUG alumni and students meet in Jakarta
The alumni-dinner took place at the lovely Sate Senayan of Kebon Sirih branch. Prof.dr. Olaf Scholten and Prof.dr. Herbert Löhner of the University of Groningen traveled to Jakarta with more than 20 RUG students of the Faculty of Mathematics and took this as an opportunity to meet our alumni in Indonesia. Professor Scholten shared with us the interesting RUG research on Cosmic Rays and Lightening using LOFAR, an interferometric array of dipole antenna stations distributed throughout the Netherlands and in several countries in Europe.

The founding members of the Alumni Chapter Jakarta also presented themselves: Regina Sari Fabianti, Ismail Fahmi, Aston Goad, and Mark Noordhoek Hegt. Unfortunately, Paripurna Poerwoko could not attend. Also, Ponti Caroline from the GROW RUG office Jakarta was of great help as always!

News from Groningen
Sari gave updates from Groningen. The University is now one of the 100 best universities according to the most important international rankings. Moreover, the Global Employability Survey 2014 of the New York Times revealed that the University ranks number 86 for international employers worldwide. This has great significance for alumni, as their degree is suddenly worth a lot more on the international market.

Other exciting news: the University is working to establish a campus in Yantai, China. It will become a true Groningen University where our English programs will be taught by our own (international) teachers. Students will receive the same degree as they would in Groningen, with the same high international quality. The University will be called University of Groningen Yantai (UGY). More information

With support from the Ubbo Emmius Fund, Dr. Ron Holzhacker, who presented during the last alumni-event last November, found funds for the second round of his multidisciplinary PhD program on Good Governance and a Sustainable Society. Unilever Indonesia has offered their support for this program. That means that the RUG will welcome a group of about 10-15 Indonesian PhD students soon. These Indonesian PHD students will study and practice (non-)corruption recognition and measures. More information
