VC Newsletter
12 February '21

Hi there and Welcome back to another instalment of the VC Newsletter.

This week we're delving into all things L.O.V.E. That's right it's the Valentines / Anti-Valentines / Galentines special you've all been waiting for.

Featuring tales of Domenica's first valentine, some recommendations, more Top TikToks courtesy of Pheebs, a very special edition of our Desert Island Disc selections from Louise and, of course, cake.
The year was 2003... Domenica innocently sat in her year 6 class as the teacher announced a dance party, joking that the boys had to pair with the girls. Naturally, everyone FREAKED OUT... except for Marlon, who didn't hesitate to say "I'm gonna dance with Minca, because she can dance".

Marlon wasn't wrong, Minca could certainly dance (and in that moment was very "gassed").

Some week's later, on Friday February 14, Marlon approached Minca in the morning queue for the classroom proudly gifting her some Galaxy chocolate and the romantic card you'll find below.

What followed was a five week whirlwind romance!
LOVE this homemade card that Abbi's sister made and sent her for Galentines.. a real nice reminder to tell your friends and family you love them.
Let's be honest... Valentines Day is probably the worst of them. Here are 18 reasons why Valentines sucks

Domenica's new Instagram account @why_do_m3n makes affirms this, as she shares a collection of weird, hilarious, and downright rude comments she sees on guy’s dating profiles or messages she gets sent. As the profiles bio states, it isn't for the faint hearted!
Natasha Lunn Newsletter: Called Conversations on Love and she interviews someone different each time, not necessarily about romantic love, its much meatier than that. I loved this issue with Lemn Sissay about his relationship with his poetry

My Old Lady: a British–French–American comedy-drama starring the wonderful Maggie Smith.  Mathias, a down-and-out New Yorker, travels to Paris to sell a large, valuable apartment he has inherited from his estranged father. Once there, he discovers an old woman, Mathilde, living in the apartment with her daughter Chloé.

Modern Love: the column/podcast/TV show and book by New York Times. There's plenty to make you laugh, cry and cringe. One for all the romantics out there.
Queen of Puddings - courtesy of national treasure Nigella Lawson. Thanks to Angela for sharing this, it looks and sounds delicious.

Preparation time less than 30 mins
Cooking time 30 mins to 1 hour

Yes, that's right - you could be eating this in just over an hour's time. What are you waiting for?

Louise steps up this week with a very special edition, sharing "In the spirit of Valentine’s day, rather than subject you all to my own Desert Island Discs, here’s a (slightly less meaningful) Desert Island Disco of love songs for you to dance away at your desks to".

Listen to it here:
  1. Stevie Wonder, because dancing along to this song on a sunny day in Hyde Park was one of the happiest I’ve ever had.
  2. I’ve banged on about World Headquarters, the best club in the world a million times, but I must have gone to their resident club night, Uplifting Grooves every Friday night for about three years, and this would often be the song playing at kicking out time.
  3. Reggae will always be my first love genre-wise, and Dawn Penn is the best of the best of the best. Also accurately tells the story of my dating life.
  4. No Valentine’s playlist would be complete without a bit of smoochy lover’s rock.
  5. Without a doubt, the best place in London for good music is the Savers on Stoke Newington High Street. Heard this in the queue for loo roll about 6 months ago and have listened to it almost every day since.
  6. My greatest lockdown love has been Charlie Bones’ breakfast show on NTS radio. It’s seen me through many a walk around Victoria Park, this is one of his regular bangers.
  7. Donna Summer will always remind me of the First Lady of Disco, my mam.
  8. Every year, my best mate Jo and I manage to wangle our way into the Beggars Group Christmas party. Every year, we are the least cool and interesting people there, and every year we embarrass ourselves dancing to this.

Happy Valentines, have a lovely weekend.
