Happy New Year!

Welcome to our first Newsletter for 2017.  This is coming to you in a bit of a hurry to let you know that Wellington City Council is launching the new community office at 8 Constable St - "Kia Ora Newtown" - on Thursday this week, 26th January.  The opening ceremony is at 10.30 am, followed by fun activities, giveaways and spot prizes from 11am – 1pm at the Constable Street play area across the road.  There are Zoo Passes and Sevens Tickets on offer for some lucky people!

Apologies for the short notice - earthquakes, Christmas and New Year holidays and the Anniversary weekend holiday mean that establishing this Community office, deciding on the name Kia Ora Newtown, and now inviting you all to the opening was firstly delayed and now is being completed in a rush.

If you can't come along on Thursday you are welcome to call in to "Kia Ora Newtown" in the near future. In our October and November newsletters we introduced you to Ray Tuffin, the WCC Community Liaison Advisor for Newtown who has been working in our community since 31st October.  Ray is based at Kia Ora Newtown and is very interested to meet all the locals, hear about your ideas for Newtown and discuss how WCC can help.
The 21st Newtown Festival Street Fair Day is on Sunday March 5th 2017
Make sure to keep the date free for the biggest event of our year!
The line-ups for the stages will be announced soon, the buskers are booked, free street sports will feature again and stall bookings are coming in at a great rate!  There will be a Festival information table at the "Kia Ora" opening - see above - come and talk with us about what is happening, and how you can get involved.  There are plenty of openings for volunteers!
Would you like to book a stall? Its not too late, but the site is filling fast!
Showcase your wares to the Festival's mega crowds - an estimated 80,000+ people came through this year. Community and sports groups can have information stalls from as little as $25, and if you want to fund-raise for a good cause please get in touch with us at to discuss your ideas. See the Festival website for bookings.
There are other "Celebrate Newtown" events happening in February and March. In particular the Residents' Association and the Newtown Festival are organising the following:
  • Newtown Residents' Association Neighbours' Night at Newtown Park on Friday 24th February, 5-8pm, with a BBQ and lots of fun activities.  This is supported by Neighbours' Day Aotearoa.
  • Great Newtown Garage Sale on the morning of Saturday March 11th
  • Bike Rodeo on Sunday March 12th 10am -1pm at Carrara Park, in association with ReBicycle and supported by the WCC Communities on Bikes Fund. The aims are to build skills, gain confidence, and have fun on a temporary bike playground for children . Bikes supplied!
Look out for more information about these and other events on our Newtown Festival website events page in the near future.

If you, your neighbours, or a group you belong to have an event planned over February and March let us know, we will be happy to promote it as well!
