Honoring, Celebrating, and Inspiring –25 Years Strong

Beginning this month, South Carolina’s Coalition for Mathematics & Science (SCCMS), along with S2TEM Centers SC kicks off a campaign of celebration and inspiration, and we invite all of South Carolina to join us!

S2TEM Centers SC began its journey as the Statewide Systemic Initiative in 1993 as a response to the sense that there were inequities impacting the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. Though our name has changed throughout the years, our statewide infrastructure for STEM education continues to focus on leveling the playing field, giving students greater learning opportunities, and teachers needed resources and support.

As such, we have been enriched by the partnerships and relationships developed throughout the years.  So, during the coming year, we want to celebrate you, your professional growth and hard work!

You may be:

  • the curriculum leader who gained support in the acquisition of exemplary curriculum materials through our LASER initiative.
  • the school leadership team that networked through our LeadS2MART program.
  • the instructional coach that completed the 8-Day Cognitive Coaching Seminar and uses those techniques to more effectively guide teachers’ professional growth.
the administration team that worked through the IC Maps and led your school to become STEM certified.
  • the district that participated in iSTEM, connecting their instruction to engineering practices while learning from business/industry leaders.
  • the classroom teacher who benefited from academic standards support.
  • the educator that learned new instructional strategies and disciplinary literacy practices and implemented them in your classroom.
  • the business or community partner who committed time and resources in the support of STEAM education.

Whether you’ve partnered with us in the past, are currently working with us, or are looking to implement or improve STEAM education in the future - you are part of this celebration.

We want to hear from you!  Use the form on our website to submit your story.  Tell us how you’ve used your learning and how it has impacted your professional practice.  Be sure to include a photo of you in action with your classroom or coworkers.

We will be selecting stories every few weeks to feature on our website and our social media channels. We will highlight some of the submissions at our culminating celebration at the South Carolina State Capitol in March.  We hope these stories will inspire continual growth in your practice.

While we have been at this work for 25 years, much remains to be done.  Issues of equity in education still exist today.  We recognize that the greatest impact on student learning is the skills, abilities, and knowledge of teachers.  S2TEM Centers SC continues to provide person to person support to schools and districts across the state who benefit from an organization that is locally accessible and rooted in research and best practices from around the nation.

One thing has changed, our focus has broadened.  S2TEM Centers SC no longer focuses on just mathematics and science instruction in the classroom, but also provides support for integrating technology, engineering, and art.  In addition, our family has grown.  S2TEM Centers SC is just one of many organizations affiliated with SCCMS.  Together, we work not only with schools and districts but also with business and industry, out-of-school learning providers, and community organizations supporting STEAM expereiences.

Join us in inspiring a future of equality and opportunity for all students in South Carolina.

Have a great idea to bolster STEAM in your classroom, school or community organization?  We want to help.  Submit an application to the “Growing in SC: The Future of STEAM is Here” grants designed to support educators in developing and implementing new projects and/or units that support STEAM education as related to the Profile of the SC Graduate.  Awardees will receive up to $2,500 as well as 8 hours of professional development worth $1,500.  Grant applications can be downloaded at .  We’ll be accepting applications until January 12, 2018.

Give yourself a shout out – think about how you might use $2,500 toward your next STEAM initiative and join in the celebration.
