With the amount of rain (a record amount for Portland) and cool temperatures we’ve been having you would never know winter’s over and now its spring.  Here at Peninsula we are well aware of the seasons because we are putting the finishing touches on our summer camp programs at Sabin and Boise-Eliot. Camp begins Thursday, June 14 and ends Friday, August 24. Tuition is affordable, scholarships are available, and children can attend on a weekly or monthly basis. Please talk to Andrea (503.280.0534, ext. 24 or, Sam at Sabin (503-756-2761), or Francine at Boise-Eliot (503-309-2956) for more information. We look forward to seeing many of your children at camp this summer! Please remember that our registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Working with our Family Involvement Committee and the Junior League of Portland we are planning a special Family Week of activities Saturday, May 12 through Friday, May 18. On Saturday, May 12 we are participating in the St. John's Parade ( You and your family are invited to ride in our school bus, walk alongside the bus, or have your children ride their bikes/trikes. It will be a fun time! On Tuesday, May 16, a volunteer professional photographer will take pictures of all the students, and on Thursday, May 17, our students will be making a frame for their photos. Winding up the week we will have Mr. Ben give a concert on Friday, May 18, as well as having a variety of crafts and refreshments. If you would like to get involved in any of these activities contact Andrea at 503.280.0534, ext. 24 or
As many of you know, Natalie is leaving the program soon to pursue another opportunity. She has made many contributions to our program and will be missed. We wish her great success in her future endeavors. She promises to stay in touch and come visit us. Until we hire her successor Andrea will take over Natalie’s responsibilities.

Notes from Sue, Education Director

Spring is upon us, and we are all looking forward to more outside time with children soon. I think children and teachers alike are ready for the end of April showers.  Please remember to continue sending warm clothing, coats, hats, and boots for children until the weather really does warm up and dry out. We try to get children outside every day for fresh air and the exercise we know is critical to support healthy development and learning. On those days when the weather really is just too rainy to be outdoors much, our preschool and junior deck improvements are proving invaluable. Many thanks to parent Mike Conrad who helped with finish work on the installation of our climbing wall.

On our March 30 In-Service Day we did spring cleaning in classrooms and made changes to classroom environments to support learning. This is important to support children’s learning and difficult for teachers to do with class in session. We really appreciate parent’s understanding of this need in order to support the high quality experiences we want for children here at Peninsula. Many thanks to parent volunteer Tanya Crenshaw who answered the call for sewing help! Tanya sewed panels which will hang in several classrooms to soften environments and make spaces more inviting for children.

We have a new head teacher in Preschool I. Christopher Tormey joined us in March and the transition to a new teacher has been very smooth. Chris joins our team of excellent preschool head teachers who all have college degrees in Early Childhood Education. Chris has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and experience teaching with Head Start and the Children’s Relief Nursery.

Teacher Whitney McCool has returned from maternity leave and is taking over as head teacher in the Junior II classroom. Whitney also has a degree in Early Childhood Education. We are really proud of all our teachers here at Peninsula and the way all their qualifications continue to spring forward due to their commitment to professional development and being the best teachers they can be. They really are our most important asset and the heart of the program for children.

Sabin Site Notes

March was an exciting month here at Sabin. From creating outfits of paper and wrapping ourselves as gifts to our spring break field trips, the month of March has been super fun. The children here at Sabin are looking forward to having Mr. Ben come at the end of the month. Saturday March 7 the trees on the corner of 15th and Prescott will be decorated with stars and flowers designed by the kids.  The trees are being decorated to raise awareness of the space, which is being turned into a community space by the neighborhood association for the community around Sabin. We are thankful to have such an involved community surrounding our school and are glad to have the chance to participate in this project!

Boise-Eliot Site Notes

Welcome back from Spring Break! April is here, and we are hoping to spend more time outside as the rain abates. This month we will be studying lady bugs and Spring blooms.

Parents please remember we are taking summer enrollment now. You can see our summer schedule here: And the Sabin summer schedule is posted here:
