We hope all of you will have a fun and safe 4th of July holiday.  The summer has already been and will continue to be a busy time for us.  Our camp program at Sabin Elementary School for 5-12 year old students is off and running.  We still have several spaces open throughout the summer, so please contact me if you're interested in signing up (ken@penchild.org or 503-280-0534, ext. 21).

On Sunday, June 23rd we kicked off our summer outreach programs by participating in the NE Portland Sunday Parkways.  Despite rain we gave away almost 800 cups of lemonade and talked to many people about our school.  If you would like to get involved, we will also be participating in the Mississippi Street Fair on Saturday July 13, the N Portland Parkways on Sunday July 28th, and the Alberta Street Fair on Saturday August 10th.  See me if you would like to volunteer.  Its fun and we could use the help! Our goal in taking part in these events is to let the community know all about our various programs. 
 
In the next few weeks you will notice a few things different about our website and signs around the school. We are changing our logo, and we are in the process of making a small change to our name. Our new name will be Peninsula Children’s Learning Center.  We felt that by adding “Learning” to our name, people will better understand the educational mission of our organization.
 
Lastly I want to thank Joan Corella who is stepping down as our board president.  She was a wonderful support to me and did a great job in leading our Board.  I also want to congratulate and welcome our new Board President Bonnie Morris. I’m looking forward to working with her during the coming year.
 
As I stated at the beginning of this article, we are not taking the summer off.  If you have any thoughts or comments about the above or any other issues, I welcome your input.


Notes from Tracy and Amber, Co-Directors of Education

Here at Peninsula Children’s Learning Center we love summer and all the fun things that it brings.  The children enjoy playing in the water, extra play time outside and lots of fun field trips.  We want to make sure the children are prepared for these activities so that they can be safe while having fun. 
Please remember the following guidelines for safe summer play at Peninsula:
1.       Please provide your child with extra clothes to change into after getting wet.  Water play occurs frequently and spontaneously especially on the really warm days!
 
2.       Proper footwear is a must!.  Flip flops can be unsafe for young children and often contribute to falls, so we ask that all footwear has a strap on the back.
 
3.       Water, water, water!  Children need plenty of fluids when playing outside in warm weather.  For young children a good rule of thumb is to provide 2 oz of water for every 10 minutes spent outside.  We provide water on each playground.  If you would like to bring in a water bottle for your child, that would be great!  It just needs to be labeled with your child's name.
 
4.       Wear sunscreen!  Please provide us with sunscreen to apply to your child, as well as a release form giving us permission to apply it.  (These permission forms are available from your child’s teacher.)  
Just a few serious sunburns can increase your child's risk of skin cancer later in life. Kids don't have to be at the pool, beach, or on vacation to get too much sun. Their skin needs protection from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they're outdoors.

Peninsula Summer Camp at Sabin


Our first week of the Summer Program was busy and fun! We visited Overlook Park and Oaks Bottom nature preserve and got to know one another and our classroom through games and play.

In July we will leave at 9:30 on Mondays for Arbor Lodge, King School, Wishire and Grant Parks.  We will go to movies at the Lloyd Center on Wednesdays.  We will be leaving at 9:15.  On Thursdays we will go to the Food Bank, Oak’s Park, and Kruger Farm.  We will leave by 9:00 am for these field trips.

Remember that the week of July 8-12 we will be meeting at Boise Elliot Elementary School due to maintenance at Sabin.  Check your parent folder for a map and directions.

We are providing water bottles for use while at school.  If your child would rather bring their own to leave here, please do so.  Also remember to bring sunscreen.  If you haven’t paid for the movie for next week, please turn your $1 per child in to Abby or Francine.  Please check your parent folder for a list of all costs for trips.

Thank You from a Peninsula Parent

Sam and I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Peninsula Children’s Center staff.  The kitchen staff who prepare the food and nourish the children’s bodies, the cleaning staff who keep the environment sanitary and safe, the administrative staff who keep the business running, and the teachers, assistants, and volunteers for all of their patience, guidance, and love. 

Sam and I came to Peninsula on a scholarship based on my enrollment and academic performance at Portland Community College, where I was pursuing my Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree. Now I've graduated, and so, our journey continues. 

Sam developed such amazing relationships at Peninsula that I couldn’t bear the thought of removing him from the Center until as long as possible. We commuted from Vancouver to Portland for him to remain in this environment that he so thrives in, but time has come for a change.  It has been challenging but so worth the growth and nourishment that Sam’s has been blessed with. 
Belinda and Daniel have been sunbeams in our life.  

Thank you so much for the enrichment that you have all added to our lives.

Fond Farewells

Dear Peninsula Families, 

I am writing to inform you that I will leave Peninsula Children’s Learning Center as the Co-Director of Education for Preschool and School Age Programs on July 19th to begin a new role at Western Oregon University. I have greatly enjoyed my time here with Peninsula, and I will miss my daily interactions with everyone here - especially the children and parents. I appreciate the hard work and dedication of each person I worked with here at Peninsula. Dear Peninsula Families,

Each year, around this time, we start to say goodbye to all the Kindergarten-bound children in the classroom. After six years here at Peninsula, I will be part of the crew that will be leaving. My last day will be July 12th. My life journey has provided me with the opportunity to move out of state, and I am accepting the challenge. This year has been one of the best years I have had here. Grandma Norma and Marika have been with me since I started here, and with the addition of Daniel, my classroom life has been super. I have enjoyed every individual I have come in contact with and always look forward to coming to work.

Thank you to all of you who have shared your life and your incredible children with me. I take each experience and add it to my life book on which to grow and ponder. I love what I do, and I am going to miss doing it here at Peninsula. I leave with hope and caring for a better future for all of us.
 



New Security Door at Annex

We're very pleased to let all families know that we recently installed a security door at the Peninsula Annex. This new feature was the final element in our renovation of the Annex space in the first floor of St. Irene's Byzantine Catholic Church. A grant from the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette paid for all of the capital expenses necessary to make this space into a welcoming environment for our Preschool classroom.  Thank you, United Way!



Save the Date: Peninsula's turning 42!

We are also busy planning Peninsula’s 42nd birthday party which will be a great event for the whole family. Don’t forget it will be on Sunday, September 15th, from 1-3pm at the Maryland Campus.  Be on the lookout for more information as we get closer to the date.
