Most school newsletters in June are thanking parents, teachers, and volunteers for a great year of school and hoping that all of their students will have a great summer.  This is not the case at Peninsula.  Here at Peninsula we are only closed for 12 days during the year, and four of those days are for staff training.  Even our school age programs begin summer camp (we still have openings) the day after school closes, June 13.  This year we have combined our summer camp programs to one campus. Camp will be at Sabin from 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
We realize that it is important to you our families that we never close.  We want you to know that you can count on us for quality care and education for your children year round. 
We plan on being involved in some fun events this summer, and if you have a few hours to spare we could use your help. On Sunday, June 10, we are participating in the Rose Festival Community Fair at Waterfront Park from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  On Sunday, June 24, we will be at the Sunday Parkways from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, July, from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. we are going to be at the Mississippi Street Fair, and on Saturday, August 11 we will be at the Alberta Street Fair from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Please contact me if you can volunteer at any or all of the above, or would like more information (503.280.0534, ext. 21 or    
Lastly it is with sadness that we say good-by to Andrea who has been at the Center for more than 5 years. She will be leaving Peninsula at the end of June due to government funding cuts. Andrea has been the type of staff person that if you needed something done you asked her even if it was not even close to her job description. For example….she has driven the school bus when the driver was sick, and cooked lunch for the entire school when our cook was suddenly absent. The school will miss her positive attitude, and I will miss the professionalism and knowledge that she brought to her position. I wish her nothing but success for the future, and hope that she will be a frequent visitor to Peninsula.

Hello my name is Amber Averitt, and I am excited to join the staff of Peninsula Children’s Center.

I look forward to getting to know all the children and their families at Peninsula. I have been working in the field of Early Childhood for over 15 years. I am currently working on my Doctorate degree in Early Childhood Education Administration. I relocated from Las Vegas about a year ago, and I really enjoy the outdoors and the many events that Portland has to offer.

Happy June!  Welcome to summer everyone!  Here at Peninsula Children’s Center we love summer and all the fun things that it brings.  The children enjoy playing in the water, extra play time outside and lots of fun field trips.  We want to make sure the children are prepared for these activities so that they can be safe while having fun.  Please remember the following guidelines for summer fun, both at school and at home:
·   Please provide your child with extra clothes to change into after getting wet.  Water play is occurs frequently and spontaneously! 
·   Proper footwear is a must as well.  Flip flops can be unsafe for young children and often contribute to falls so we ask that all footwear has a strap on the back. 
·    Water, water, water!  Children need plenty of fluids when playing outside in warm weather.  For young children a good rule of thumb is to provide 2 oz of water for every 10 minutes spent outside. 
·   Wear sunscreen!  Please provide us with sunscreen to apply to your child, as well as a release form giving us permission to apply it.  (These permission forms are available from your child’s teacher.)   
    Children who are protected from the sun now will have fewer problems with skin cancer, sun spots and premature aging when they are adults.  Please be a good role model as well and make sure your
    child sees you put your own sunscreen on! 
Enjoy your summer!  We will be helping your child enjoy their summer days as well.  We invite you to spend a few minutes on our playground with your child either at drop off time or pick up time. Our playground is designed for fun, and your child will love to show you their favorite activities to participate in while outdoors.  

School-Age Summer Camp Program

Peninsula's 2012 School-Age Summer Camp will operate at Sabin Elementary School. Our Summer Camp program is a great way to keep your 5 - 12 year old child engaged and active this summer. The Summer Camp runs from June 14 – August 24, 2012, and is open Monday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Children can look forward to weekly themes and two field trips each week.

Sign up for a whole month 5-days a week ($600) or 3-days a week ($360). Or, sign up weekly 5-days per week ($165) or 3-days per week ($99).

Goodbye from Andrea Valdez-Marmaro

It has been a pleasure working with the families and staff here at Peninsula for over 5 ½ years. My last day will be June 29, 2012. I will be going back to Redmond, Oregon, for a while continuing my education and looking forward to new and exciting opportunities.
I would like to thank Peninsula for the opportunity it has given me to grow and expand my knowledge and build relationships. I feel and hope I have made a positive difference here. I will miss the children, parents and staff.

Parents' Night Out, Kids' Night In: We're going "camping"!

Did you ever wish you had a safe, fun place for your child so that you could have some well earned time off? Dinner and a movie? Spa day? We have a solution for you! On the last Friday of the month we want to open our doors for an evening of fun for kids so that you can feel safe and comfortable taking some time for yourself. 
For the month of June our theme will be “Camping”.  Our activities will be fun, and organized around that theme.  Dinner will also be provided! 
Here are some of the details—more information coming later!
When:  June 29, 2012       6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Who:    Open to current students, and friends and relatives of current students.
              (Must be aged 3-8 and potty trained.) 
What:    Fun activities and yummy food! 
Cost:     $25 per child, pre-registration, and pre-payment is required by Tuesday June 26th.
              (Registration forms are available from your child’s teacher.)

On Friday, June 15, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., we will be hosting a Family Celebration in the Commons. There will be a free frame decorating activity sponsored by and staffed with volunteers from the Junior League of Portland (JLP). Immunization Update

Peninsula Children's Center is fortunate to have two pediatricians on our Board of Directors. At their suggestion we are forwarding you information regarding pertussis. They suggest you also notify grandparents and adult relatives would are around your children. Younger children (and especially tiny infants) are particularly vulnerable, as they have not yet had their immunizations. There is currently an epidemic in Washington state, and several cases have been reported in Oregon. Immunizations are available at your health care provider and/or at the Multnomah County Health Department.  The TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccine costs $15 through the health department.
