Directly Speaking

As we head into the last days of 2011, I would like to thank the many people that made this past year such a successful one for Peninsula.  First I want to thank the entire staff.  We are so fortunate to have such a qualified and dedicated group of people. A close second to the staff is our Board.  Under the continued leadership of Marilyn Couch they have provided us guidance and vision for our school.
During the course of this past year we have had wonderful community support:

  • Junior League of Portland continues to be all-star partners who donated a variety of goods as well as countless hours (and lots of sweat equity) on several projects this year
  • Adidas donated shoes for our 40th Birthday celebration and launched a fit and wear testing program that earns free shoes for participants
  • Rebuilding Together donated materials and volunteer labor for an all-grounds clean-up
  • Oregon Tradeswomen built our beautiful new stroller shed
  • Boeing Employee Fund approved a grant for new lights for the Commons
  • Social Ventures Partners Portland awarded $25,000 over two years as well as many incredible, talented volunteers who donate their expertise to improving our program
  • The Nike Employee Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation and the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Advisory Committee of the Portland Development Commission funded improvements to the preschool playground deck including new heaters, a new weather shielding awning, and a soon to be installed climbing wall
  • And, of course, ongoing support from the City of Portland Children’s Levy provides critical program support
If I left anyone out please accept my apologies
As we prepare for the New Year we are always trying to improve the quality of our program.  We need your input! Please tell us about things that you think are successful and about things that you feel we can improve. Our goal is to provide your children the best experience possible while your family is a part of Peninsula.
On behalf of our entire staff I want to wish you a wonderful holiday season and thank you for all the support that you have given ME this past year.

Notes from Sue, Education Director

Family Input Strengthens Program
Dear Families,
We highly value your input and want to thank a couple of families this month who have made a significant difference here at Peninsula.  Some of you may have noticed the new lights, heaters, and awnings on the Junior/Preschool deck which is making this a more pleasant play space in the cold, wet winter months.  This project, which we got funded through grants came directly from the suggestion of parent Dylan Williams.  Thank you Dylan for sharing your inspiration with us; it was a great idea and is making that space so much nicer for the children!
Still to come, later in the year as part of the same grant, will be a preschool climbing wall and safety mats.   We would also like to thank the Nike Employee Grant Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation and Portland Development Commission’s Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area Community Livability Grant for funding this great program improvement.
Another parent who stepped forward to make a difference is Kelsey Snook.  Kelsey is a member of our Board of Directors and recently stepped forward to start a new family committee.  Thirteen families have already signed up to join the committee and the first meeting will be held soon.  Thank you families!  Please watch for notice of the first meeting and let Natalie or Kelsey know if you are interested in joining.   All Peninsula families are welcome.  You can contact Kelsey at
Because we want to offer as many ways as possible for families to share their great ideas and input about the program we have installed a new family suggestion box just to the left of the security door as you are walking in.  We would love to hear your feedback on the program – both things you are happy about and appreciate as well as your ideas for improvements.

School Age Site Notes

Boise Eliot is celebrating a theme of Peace Around the World. The children have helped in decorating holiday trees and many are hoping for a snowy winter break. During the winter break please remember to bring a sack lunch for your child each day, breakfast and snacks will be provided. If there are any days that you know that your child will not be attending please let the staff know in advance so that they can best plan for any outings that they might be taking during this time. We hope that all Peninsula Families have a wonderful Winter Break!
