Greetings from our GM,

Wow. It’s already October. I’ve barely been here two months, and it already feels like a year. But don’t take that the wrong way! I mean, I already feel so at home at Daily Groceries--working with the staff every day, learning the rhythms of the store. Even as I know I have so much more to learn, I already love being a part of the Daily team, not only tackling all the issues and obstacles that each day presents, but also just taking joy in the little things. Learning about my colleagues; talking to members and shoppers; working my way through tasting the Deli menu; sharing my passion for social issues and food; training new people and also learning in the process. I consider myself lucky every day to be here.
As for the co-op world, October is a busy month. First of all, October is National Cooperative Month. Daily Groceries is a retail member-owned cooperative, but there are lots of different types of cooperatives, serving many different roles in our society. Learn more about them here.
As I write this, I’m preparing to go to a conference for all General Managers in the National Cooperative Grocers’ Association (a cooperative of cooperatives). I have worked with NCG before, but this will be my first time in the GM role, and I look forward to gaining a new perspective.
We also have our Annual Member Meeting coming up on October 18th. We will be holding it at Buvez this year, and look forward to using that space and engaging with our members. The Annual Meeting is also a great time to meet the candidates running for the Board and to cast your vote.
Even if you didn’t have the time to commit to serving on the Board, there are other ways for members to get involved. We are launching a Member Volunteer Program, to not only help us in our Outreach goals, but also so members can engage with staff and the community in meaningful ways. We will be looking for member volunteers to assist Daily with tablings at farmers markets and other community events. Members will receive a coupon for a discount at Daily after completing volunteer hours, and they will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping their co-op grow and change its community. Please get in touch with me ( or Kelsey Young ( for more details about volunteering.
In addition to the Annual Member Meeting, and the Member Volunteer program, we are also having a Member Drive in October. We have Member Drives twice annually--in the spring and fall--to make that extra push to reach out to our community. This Member Drive also coincides nicely with the launch of our new sponsored membership program. Daily is now sponsoring membership for anyone using EBT/SNAP benefits. Sponsored members enjoy all the same benefits as current members, except the ability to withdraw equity.
So that’s a lot on the docket, but I’m also confident in our ability as a staff and a community to take it on. Thank you as always for your support of Daily Groceries. See you around the store. :)

It's a party!

It's that time again! The Annual Member Meeting is happening 6:30pm-8:30pm October 18th at Buvez (585 Barber St. Suite A). If you haven't been to this meeting before, you are missing out! This is a great event for our staff and board members and owner-members (that's you!) to hang out and enjoy dinner and drinks while learning about updates at Daily. There are a ton of changes happening in our co-op right now. Don't miss out on the excitement!

Janet Geddis of Avid Bookshop will be our wonderful emcee for the evening. We will have pizza from Automatic Pizza. We will provide drink tickets to be used at the bar. And we will have dessert from The Comerian

This is the perfect time to meet and network with other members of our co-op or just hang out and enjoy some food surrounded by the caring members of your community!

All owner-members invited!!!

Member Volunteer Program

We are introducing a member volunteer program. Each month we will include volunteer opportunities in our newsletter. This month we are asking you to join us at the annual River's Alive Clean-up! Read more about the event here. The event takes place October 20th, 8:00am-12:00pm. Please respond to this email or contact by 10/13 in order to be registered with Daily and receive a coupon for 20% off your next purchase!

If you have a volunteer opportunity you'd like our membership to be a part of, send it to for review. Check out our next newsletter for more chances to volunteer and save!

Member Drive and Sponsored Membership!

Our annual fall owner drive is happening now! Much like NPR, co-ops cannot exist without the continued financial support of the people who use it. Please consider becoming a member or making an equity payment during this time. As a thank you, new members and equity renewers will receive a free Chocolove chocolate bar and have your name entered into a drawing to win a $50 gift certificate! If you are a fully invested member, you are encouraged to refer a friend. Every referral = 1 entry into the drawing mentioned above.
Sign-up in the store or make a payment online! This drive ends November 5th. Our gift card winner will be announced shortly after.

With this member drive, we are also launching our new sponsored membership program for anyone who uses EBT/SNAP benefits! (This is an entirely free membership - Daily will cover all equity costs.) In addition to enjoying all the benefits of membership (except equity withdrawal), sponsored members will also receive a free Chocolove bar and be entered into the gift certificate drawing. Sign-up now for those extra perks! If you do not use EBT, please share this information with your friends and family that do! Membership gives you access to special member discounts, the ability to special order items in bulk (also with a discount!), the ability to run for the Board, the ability to vote in co-op elections, the ability to earn coupons through volunteer work, invitations to our Board Meetings and the Annual Meeting, and strengthens the cooperative community in Athens!

Cooperative Principle 2

Democratic Member Control -
Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members
- those who buy the goods or use the services of the cooperative
- who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.
