Hydraulic Testing

MIT intern Aliza Abraham conducted tests of the Free Jet hydroEngine across a range of operating conditions to extend the hydraulic test data for that machine.  These data will drive future Free Jet product development, such as continued performance improvement.

Controls Improvements

At the Monroe Hydro project, the controls team made several modifications to flow control to enable higher precision adjustments of the plant flow. This is one example of how the product team works with our customers to optimize plant performance. Also at Monroe, a blade in the turbine runner was outfitted with sensors to expand our data collection on operating conditions inside the turbine. This work will enable the team to tune hydraulic models and improve hardware design.

Installed Projects Update

Activities continue at Natel’s Monroe and Freedom Falls hydro projects.  At Monroe, ongoing monitoring is gathering data to provide a long term picture of the machine’s operations. This data lends insights into continued product innovation and also helps finetune maintenance and operations procedures. At Freedom Falls, after the typical lower flow summer conditions, the plant is being prepared for increased flow conditions in the fall.

watershedOS™ Update

Natel continues to advance its watershedOS software, updating the Project Calculator which is now powered by watershedOS.  The new Project Calculator is available on Natel’s website. In addition, project assessment functionality was added to expand watershedOS’s usefulness as a tool to rapidly evaluate project sites for feasibility.

Natel in Bhutan

Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), the sovereign holding company of the Kingdom of Bhutan, on July 20, 2016 executed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to develop a 50MW portfolio of EcoSmartHydro™ projects subsequent to the successful commercial-scale (>1MW) piloting of Natel’s hydroEngine in Bhutan. Natel and DHI have jointly identified and conducted basic pre-feasibility studies on several prospective pilot project sites near Bhutan’s capital of Thimphu and are looking forward to completing full feasibility, design and interconnection studies in early 2017.

Summer Interns

Natel’s 3 engineering interns successfully concluded their projects in late August.  Returning Mechanical Engineering intern Abe Gertler designed an articulation tester, which will help Natel evaluate new belt attachment architectures.  Fluid Dynamics  intern Aliza Abraham tested the performance of Free Jet hydroEngine across a range of operational scenarios.  Finally, Controls intern Clementine Mitchell evaluated a range of platforms for Natel’s next generation of low cost controls systems.

Natel continues to search for great candidates for its internship program.  Natel interns work on real projects and gain valuable hands-on experience in Natel’s innovative product design atmosphere.

Natel in Popular Mechanics

Natel was honored to receive a “2016 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award”. Popular Mechanics described the technology saying “Natel's hydroEngine maximizes hydropower by collecting energy in two stages, once when the current enters the turbine and moves the blades up, and once when it leaves and the blades move back down. The engine makes thousands of low-pressure streams and medium-size rivers viable power sources.”

Conference Report

Natel had a robust presence at HydroVision in Minneapolis and the team enjoyed catching up with old acquaintances as well as making new ones! CTO Abe Schneider gave a presentation on the Free Jet hydroEngine and the first commercial installation of the Free Jet at the Freedom Falls Hydro Project in Maine.
