Marty's Message

One of my favorite moments at the beginning of each academic year is Convocation. At UW-Stevens Point, Convocation brings our entering students together to begin a social and academic connection to our university. It is also an opportunity for students to meet faculty and staff who stand ready to support them as they pursue their education.

This year, the largest class of new students in UWSP history heard Ron Strege deliver a message entitled: “You Matter Here.” As the title suggests, Ron’s message let every new student know that our faculty and staff care about them and are committed to their success. Ron gave a fantastic talk.
Some may think the message is cliché. After all, don’t all universities care about student success? Sure they do. However, in this case, the message was delivered by a man who always has students’ best interests in mind; and in a venue where our students were surrounded by nearly 800 faculty and staff. None of them were required to attend–they did so because our new students truly matter to them.
Marty Loy,
