Facebook contests: What are the rules?

If you’ve been using social media to engage your customers for any length of time, you probably remember the days when running Facebook contests was a confusing morass of rules, restrictions and third-party apps with bewildering interfaces.

Back in the day, Facebook contests were a minefield so fraught with danger that many companies — especially small, family-run businesses — didn’t even bother. Thankfully, today’s rules are much simpler. Companies can actually run contests on Facebook the simple way, without awkward integrated apps.

Still, there are certain things your Whatcom County business shouldn’t do, and we’ll do our best to explain. If you’re hoping to use Facebook contests and promotions to reward (and build) your audience, this post is for you.

What not to do with Facebook contests

Regarding the list of don’ts, the most important thing to remember is that you can’t ask people to involve others or to share anything on their personal timelines. For example, you can’t write:

  • “Share on your timeline to enter.”
  • “Share on your friend’s timeline to get additional entries.”
  • “Tag your friends in this post to enter.”

Featured Business: Seattle-based firm to assume majority ownership of Bellingham Cold Storage

The Joshua Green Corporation, a Seattle-based company that has been investing in the Pacific Northwest since the late 19th century, has agreed to purchase a majority stake in Bellingham Cold Storage.

Since its founding on the Bellingham waterfront in 1946, Bellingham Cold Storage has been wholly owned by the Talbot family. After this sale, JGC will own a majority of the company, and the Talbot family will remain as shareholders.

Siblings Stowe and Jane Talbot — who also own the Barkley Village real estate development — are third-generation owners of Bellingham Cold Storage. In late 2017, they decided to look for an investment partner that would enable the family to continue its involvement in the company at a reduced level while also encouraging its future growth.

Networking trail walk in Bellingham is June 28

Hello, Bellingham small business networkers!

Our first trail walk networking event, followed by happy hour at Blue Abode Bar in Barkley Village, was so much fun and such a great networking opportunity for those who attended that we’re planning another one. This activity provides you an opportunity to walk and talk with local business pros on a beautiful local trail while we also support a local small business. Sounds good, right?

BONUS: Blue Abode Bar offers happy hour pricing all night on Thursdays to those who check in at their location before hitting the trail.

The walk — from Barkley Village to the Alabama Hill bridge overlook and back — is roughly 2.5 miles, and the route is relatively flat. Wear casual, comfy clothes and shoes; workout wear is welcome and encouraged. We’ll hang out at Blue Abode after the walk for no-host sips and snacks. Hope to see you there!

What PRC has been working on:

Recharging: At PR Consulting, we work hard on behalf of our customers. We also recognize the necessity of time away, too, so that we can rest, recharge and come back with even more energy. Recently, Patti was in the cute town of Ajijic, Mexico, and Matthew visited Athens, Greece. Karen welcomed her daughter, who was visiting from California, and had a lovely hiking staycation.

Celebrating. June is Matthew's two-year work anniversary! We appreciate his incredible work ethic, his many skills and talents, and his positive attitude that shines brightly on our team and with PRC clients. We're glad he's a part of our team.
