Dear Alabama Chapter-AAP Practice Management Association Member:
Instruction does much, but encouragement everything."
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, writer and statesman
As all of you are aware, we are two and a half weeks from the AL-AAP PMA annual fall meeting! It has been a pleasure serving as your Chair and I hope that I have addressed topics that you have been able to apply in everyday practice. However, my duties will shortly come to a close and will be passed along to Reginald Hope, your current 1st Vice Chair. With the transition, the PMA will have several opportunities for new leadership; see the list and responsibilities below. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Chair; I look forward to seeing you in Birmingham!
What You Need to Know Now
BIG THANK YOU to practices who advocated for kids
The Alabama Chapter-AAP and many member practices worked hard and long hours over the last several months to make a case to Alabama legislators on the importance of fully funding Medicaid for Fiscal Year 2017. As you know, the Alabama Legislature passed the "BP oil bill" last week, ending the Special Session and allocating $190 million over the next two years to the Alabama Medicaid Agency! $85 million will, by and large, fill this coming year's budget shortfall, and $105 million will go toward Medicaid's Fiscal Year 2018 (October 1, 2017 - September 30, 2018) budget. Many, many thanks to all of the pediatricians and practice staff people who talked to our legislators, arranged media interviews, used social media to spread the word and more. You all are THE BEST!
The countdown is on! Register now for PMA Annual Meeting and Practice Management Workshop

Pediatrician: CMS mandate on EHRs to improve care for transgender patients
A CMS mandate requiring EHR vendors to include birth sex, sexual orientation and gender identity as demographic data in their platforms for stage 3 meaningful use may reduce the risk of disparities in health care for transgender patients, writes Dr. Patrick Brown, a member of the AAP Council on Clinical Information Technology. "Establishing consistent policies about what information to record and effective workflows for patients to disclose the information confidentially also will be needed to improve care for transgender patients," Brown writes.
