The Furocoumarins

The furocoumarins, or furanocoumarins, are a class of organic chemical compounds produced by a variety of plants. The chemical structure of furocoumarins consists of a furan ring annulated with coumarin. The furan may be fused in different ways producing several isomers. The compounds that form the core structure of the two most common isomers are psoralen and angelicin.

Many furocoumarins are toxic and are produced by plants as a defense mechanism against various types of predators ranging from insects to mammals.

Below you will find summaries of the notable attributes of various furocoumarins and related compounds. Catalog #: 020504
CAS #: 66-97-7

Psoralen is the parent compound in the furocoumarin family. It is structurally related to coumarin by the addition of a fused furan ring, and may be considered as a derivative of umbelliferone.

It is widely used in PUVA (psoralen + UVA) treatment for psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, and some cutaneous lymphomas.

(Methoxsalen, 8-Methoxypsoralen)

Catalog #: 020530
CAS #: 298-81-7

Used in conjunction with PUVA treatment for skin ailments, Xanthotoxin is a drug that modifies the way skin cells receive UVA radiation.

Bergamottin (5-Geranyloxypsoralen)

Catalog #: 19-335
CAS #: 7380-40-7

Bergamottin is a natural furanocoumarin found principally in grapefruit juice. It is believed to be among the compounds responsible for the grapefruit juice effect, in which the consumption of the juice affects the metabolism of a variety of pharmaceutical drugs.

Bergapten (5-Methoxypsoralen)

Catalog #: 020503
CAS #: 484-20-8

Bergapten is the compound in bergamot oil that causes phototoxicity.

Bergaptol (5-Hydroxypsoralen)

Catalog #: 19-230
CAS #: 486-60-2

A component of bergamot oil.

Isopimpinellin (5,8-Dimethoxypsoralen)

Catalog #: 19-661
CAS #: 482-27-9

There have been several studies investigating potential anticarcinogenic properties of Isopimpinellin and other so-called naturally occurring furocoumarins as anticarcinogens.

Umbelliferone (7-Hydroxycoumarin)

Catalog #: H-017
CAS #: 93-35-6

Umbelliferone is a widespread natural product of the coumarin family, and a parent compound to the furocoumarins. The compound absorbs ultraviolet light strongly at several wavelengths, and despite several indications that it is photomutagenic, it is used in sunscreens. Umbelliferone has also been reported to have antioxidant properties.
