The Issues Facing Older Adults

Last month was Older Americans Month, and at OHA we spent much of May traveling the country to discuss the issues facing older adults when it comes to oral health care. Find out where we went, who we talked to, and how we focus on older adults every day.

The Reports Are in and the Results are Rocking!

The reports are in from the 2012 Samuel D. Harris Award winners and we're excited to say that all three organizations were successful in reaching children and families about the importance of oral health during Children's Dental Health Month this year. Wondering exactly how these organizations used their grant funds? Find out here.

Visiting Our Capital for Oral Health

OHA participated in the National Dental Association's 14th Annual Day on Capitol Hill on May 9, with this year's legislative program entitled, "Impact of Federal and Local Health Care Policies on Health Disparities." During the program, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), pictured above, was honored for her work supporting oral health. Thanks to the NDA for this great opportunity to connect with Congress about the importance of oral health care.

Hello and Goodbye

As we say goodbye to our current fellow, Allyson Supowitz, we welcome our new fellow, Bailey Moorhead. Bailey comes to us from the University of Pittsburgh, where she majored in Biology and History, and will be here for a year before heading to dental school. We also welcomed our new Programs Manager this month, Dora Fisher, MPH, who will be heading up our Wisdom Tooth Project. Dora previously worked for the Institute of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has several years experience working on issues facing older adults.

Our summer interns have joined us as well. Jessica Williams is a biology major at Howard University and Andrew Halverson is studying psychology and biology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Both will be working with our Program Managers to support OHA's programs. Welcome to our new staff members!

From the President & CEO: Oral Health and the ACA

This month, the Medicaid-CHIP Dental Association held their annual symposium in Washington, DC and empowered states to think critically about the impending changes the Affordable Care Act will bring. As the landscape changes and the concept of “care coordination” takes center stage, continuing to insure that dental care is part of the coordination is essential. Remind your elected officials that oral disease is preventable and is crucial for the overall health and well-being of all Americans.

President & CEO

Congratulations!

Thank you!
