Senate Passes the Older Americans Act

The Senate passed the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act late last week, which also marked the 50th anniversary of the signing of the OAA into law. We applaud the Senate for passing this important legislation, which for the first time includes funding for oral health screenings for older adults. We encourage Congress to continue to include oral health in future legislation that impacts the overall health of the nation.
RAISE Act Calls for Support for Family Caregivers
Left to right: Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM), Washington Post columnist Michelle Singletary and AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins at the AARP Forum on Family Caregiving this month.
U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced the Recognize, Assist, Include, Support and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act this month, calling for the creation of a National Family Caregiving Project to develop a national strategy to support the 43 million family caregivers who provide $450 billion in uncompensated long-term care each year. The legislation was discussed at the Forum on Family Caregiving: Perspectives from Policymakers and Thought Leaders, convened by AARP. OHA works with AARP as part of the Assisting Caregivers Today (ACT) Caucus to support family caregivers and wholeheartedly supports the RAISE Family Caregivers Act, also endorsed by AARP. The Importance of School-Based Health Centers
OHA exhibited at the School-Based Health Alliance’s Conference June 16-19 in Austin, TX. Because many of our Smiles Across America® Program Partners are based in or work with school-based health centers, OHA is proud to attend this conference each year. Youth Program Director Tina Montgomery hosted a raffle at the OHA booth and we are pleased to announce that Kankakee School Based Health Centers in Kankakee, IL, Open Door Family Medical Centers in Ossining, NY and Mercy Medical Associates in Paducah, KY won 100 Philips Sonicare PowerUp Toothbrushes for children in their programs. Congratulations!

     Community Service Day

Check out our slideshow featuring photos from last month's ADHA Community Service Day sponsored by Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, where OHA trained more than 40 volunteer dental hygienists on the Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth curriculum. The hygienists then presented the workshop to older adults at seven different adult care facilities in Nashville.

From the President & CEO: Healthy Choices

Kids face many choices growing up, and as parents and mentors we need to encourage them to make healthy choices. OHA’s work for children, including Smiles Across America® and NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education Project), increases access to oral healthcare for hundreds of thousands of kids each year and provides valuable education to help them make healthy choices for their oral health and overall health. Support all of OHA’s pediatric initiatives by making a gift this summer, which will be matched by Henry Schein and the Henry Schein Cares Foundation.
