Advocating for Older Adults


On Sept. 11, OHA and Oral Healthcare Can't Wait, an initiative of the Dental Trade Alliance, hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill, "A State of Decay: Coming of Age Without Oral Healthcare," to bring attention to the dire situation currently facing older Americans when it comes to oral health. Learn about the oral health leaders who attended this important event and how OHA board members used their time in Washington to advocate for oral health.


Spread Your Smiles for Smiles Across America


OHA has teamed up with Listerine® Whitening® Brand and Sloane Stephens to bring healthy smiles to kids across the country and you can help. Just tweet a smiley face-- :) --with the hashtag #HealthSmiles and Listerine® Whitening® will donate $2 to Smiles Across America® (SAA). Or visit Listerine's Facebook page and "like" one of the company's posts about the campaign. The campaign ends Sept. 20 and we're just over 5,000 likes and tweets away from $35,000 for SAA, so take a minute to help us get to our goal!


Creating an Inter-Professional Dialogue


To encourage a continued dialogue among dental and medical professionals who regularly work with older adults, OHA is hosting the upcoming symposium, "Collaborative Health Care for Older Adults: A Symposium for Creating Inter-Professional Community Models." We are looking for participants who represent health, aging, or oral health organizations, have an interest in oral health as it relates to older adults, and feel they have something to contribute on the topic. Interested in attending? Smiles for Another School Year


Another school year has begun, which means another year of supporting kids' smiles through Smiles Across America® (SAA). Our SAA grantees provide preventative and restorative dental care to thousands of kids throughout the country in school-based and school-linked settings. Teaching Americans the Importance of Oral Health


OHA staff members are at the 9th Annual American Association of Dental Office Managers Conference in Orlando right now, spreading the word about OHA's programs and campaigns, including Fall for Smiles®. Thanks to the AADOM's generous support of Fall for Smiles, we've put together a booklet full of fun activities that teach kids about the importance of oral health. From experiments to crafts to demonstrations, download the entire booklet here. Also, make sure to stop by the OHA booth at the AADOM conference!

From the President & CEO: Connecting with the Issues

To continue the dialogue about the dire situation of older adults and oral health in this country, OHA attended the Florida Council on Aging's annual conference last month. In addition to speaking about the Wisdom Tooth Project and OHA's work for older adults, we were able to connect with local leaders on aging. Thank you to Oral Health Florida for sponsoring the workshop at the Florida Council on Aging conference for this excellent opportunity to continue our work for older adults.
