Smiles Across America Awards First-Ever Innovation Grants

The winners of five Smiles Across America® Innovation Grant Awards were announced this month. The grants, sponsored by Plackers, were designed to help support the efforts of our community partners who creatively deliver oral health preventive services to children that are at increased risk for oral disease. OHA Witnesses How the U.B. Smile Team Brings Healthy Mouths to Life in Buffalo, NY

In Buffalo, NY, Operation Clean Sweep is transforming neighborhoods one block at a time. When Mayor Byron Brown kicks off the campaign every Wednesday, the University of Buffalo Smile Team goes door-to-door to meet with residents. According to Ed Morrison, Chief Marketing Officer for the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, “Operation Clean Sweep allows the faculty, staff, and most important, our dental students, the chance to give back to the community while reaching countless families who would otherwise go without care.” Read about OHA’s “Smile Team” experience.

Food Companies Agree to Limit Advertising to Kids

Food companies, including Kellogg, ConAgra, and General Mills, agreed on a set of guidelines this month for cutting back advertising unhealthy foods to children. Eating healthy foods is an important part of maintaining a healthy mouth, but do these guidelines go far enough?
