Alexandria Joins Smiles Across America Family

Thanks to a grant from the Patterson Foundation, OHA welcomed CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, LA, into the Smiles Across America® (SAA) network with a celebration event on April 15 at Cloutierville Elementary and Junior High School. Support from SAA, in partnership with Dental Caravan, will allow CHRISTUS to offer dental care in addition to medical services through 17 school-based centers, with the school district receiving nearly 100% of parental consent forms back for treatment. Learn more about CHRISTUS and how SAA is helping this already great program provide even more care for vulnerable children.

Give Kids a Smile Revs Engines at NASCAR

NASCAR star Greg Biffle, and the No. 16 3M race team, Give Kids a Smile (GKAS), and OHA teamed up this month to educate Texas children about the importance of oral health. One hundred students from Our Lady of Perpetual Help visited the Texas Motor Speedway for an education program led by OHA board member Victor Rodriguez and SAA partner Baylor University's College of Dentistry that included a visit to the 3M Mobile Innovation Center and a meeting with Biffle to get kids excited about taking care of their teeth. Overall 5,200 children visited the GKAS booth for fun and games! Thanks to everyone for helping us create a fun and memorable event for these very deserving students.

Highlighting Oral Health at American Society of Aging

To continue the conversation about the oral health crisis currently facing older adults, OHA Program Manager Dora Fisher and Ann Eshenaur Spolarich, RDH, PhD, recently presented at the American Society on Aging annual meeting, Aging in America, in San Diego. This opportunity demonstrates a breakthrough in recognizing the importance of oral health for America's older adults and the need for interprofessional collaboration.

From the President & CEO: Abuse Prevention

April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month. Dental professionals play a key role in recognizing signs of abuse in young patients. Children who are physically abused often have injuries to the face, neck, mouth and head, putting dental professionals on the front lines of helping end the cycle of violence. In fact, most states require dentists and dental hygienists to be mandated reporters. Learn more about how to recognize the specific signs of abuse and how to report them in "Recognize the Signs" from Dimensions of Dental Hygiene.
