Community Service Day Workshops Educate Older Adults in Nashville
Hygienist assists a Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth Workshop participant as part of ADHA's Community Service Day in Nashville, TN.
This year’s ADHA Community Service Day showcased the commitment OHA, Colgate Oral Pharma-ceuticals and the American Dental Hygienists' Association have to giving back to the community by providing oral health education that empowers older adults to take charge of their overall wellness. OHA trained more than 40 dental hygienists on delivering the Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth curriculum, including information on how keeping good oral health habits can aid in preventing tooth decay. The volunteer dental hygienists then went to seven different adult-care facilities to talk to older adults about their oral health.
Strike Out Tobacco for America's Youth
For more than 20 years, OHA has been educating Americans about the dangers of spit tobacco through NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education Project). Almost half of new users are under the age of 18, which is why it’s so important to spread the message to young people that maintaining a healthy mouth includes avoiding tobacco.

OHA launched its 14th annual NSTEP Slogan Contest this month with Little League® Baseball and Softball, calling on players to submit slogans about the dangers of spit tobacco for a chance to win a free trip to the Little League Baseball® World Series. We invite you to learn more about the contest and to sign our No Tobacco Zone pledge to promise to remain tobacco-free.

Pilot Trains Pharmacists About Older Adult Oral Health

OHA hosted Tooth Wisdom For Pharmacists, a pilot to educate pharmacists about oral health for older adults, at Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy earlier this month thanks to funding from the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation. Eighty community pharmacists were trained, and this pilot will be evaluated for future implementation of a project to educate pharmacists about the oral health needs of older adults and an online toolkit designed to assist pharmacists with providing information about oral health-related topics. Thanks to all the pharmacists who participated and to the NSU College of Pharmacy for partnering with OHA for this important interprofessional pilot.
Funding for Expanded SAA Resources in California
Students participate in a brush-a-thon during the SAA partnership celebration with the Healthy Smiles Dental Foundation in California last year.
Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Annenberg Foundation, OHA is expanding its work to provide oral healthcare and education to children in Southern California. The grant will facilitate a Smiles Across America® (SAA) California Learning Lab to help partners in Southern California improve access to care, increase the number of children they reach and increase knowledge in the field. Learn more about how this grant will impact SAA program partners in California.
Older Adult Workshop Coming to Minnesota
Older adults participate in a Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth pilot in Batavia, IL, last summer.
OHA’s Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth is expanding to Minnesota, where the workshop will empower older adults in the state to take charge of their own oral health. OHA will also collaborate with state oral health partners to continue to update the curriculum. This expansion is possible thanks to a $50,000 grant from Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation. Read the press release for more details about this important expansion.

From the President & CEO: Celebrating Our Partnerships

I recently returned from the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Community Service Day, where hygienists presented OHA’s Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth workshop to older adults at seven different sites in Nashville. This excellent opportunity to educate older adults about oral health came thanks to a partnership with the ADHA and Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals. At OHA we value all of our partnerships that allow us to do the important work of driving access to care and increasing health literacy for vulnerable older adults who are aging in their communities.

New Exhibit Engages Kids About Oral Health
Children in Cincinnati will soon have a fun and interactive way to learn about oral health. Work began last month on a new permanent exhibit, Inside the Grin, at the Duke Energy Children’s Museum. Funded by the Junior League of Cincinnati, Procter & Gamble and a Smiles Across America® Innovation Grant from OHA, the exhibit will open next spring and feature a giant mouth that kids can interact with to learn about the importance of taking care of their mouths.
Support OHA Through AADOM
Longtime OHA supporters the American Association of Dental Office Managers (AADOM) and Patterson Dental announced a new joint initiative at OHA's 2015 gala, “A Future to Smile About.” Through the initiative, AADOM and Patterson will each donate $50 to OHA’s Smiles Across America® (SAA) program for every AADOM annual membership purchased by dental practices through January 31, 2016. Keep Tobacco Out of Baseball
As part of our commitment to educating Americans about the dangers of spit tobacco, OHA is a principle partner in Knock Tobacco Out of the Park, a coalition that includes the American Lung Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association. The coalition’s goal is to end tobacco use in major league ball parks, where smokeless tobacco use sets an impressionable example for young Americans. Visit OHA’s NSTEP webpage to learn how you can help.
