Making the Pitch for Healthy Mouths

NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education Program) slogan contest winner Glen Huggins attended the Little League World Series with his family this week, throwing out the first pitch at a game on Aug. 16. Glen's slogan, "Be a home run hitter, not a ballpark spitter," is being featured throughout the series in South Williamsport, Pa., reaching tens of thousands of young baseball and softball players and their families about the dangers of spit tobacco.

OHA Looks to the Future

Mike McCarthy, Chief Strategy Officer and Managing Partner at Lanmark360, generously donated his time this month to lead OHA staff members in a two-day retreat about the future of our organization. We're excited to implement the ideas we discussed over the upcoming year to help us bring even more healthy mouths to life in 2014. Thank you, Mike, for your time and for your enthusiasm for our cause.

Fifteen Organizations, One Cause

Our Smiles Across America® partners come from different communities and different organizations across the country, but they all have one thing in common--providing oral health care to the children who need it most. Last month, 15 partners gathered in the Twin Cities to share their stories and experiences with each other. Find out what they learned and why they found the experience so rewarding.

3M ESPE Fall for Smiles

OHA is proud to welcome longtime supporter 3M ESPE as a new major supporter of the upcoming Fall for Smiles® campaign, which educates Americans about the importance of maintaining a healthy smile through brushing and flossing, visiting the dentist, eating healthy foods, and avoiding tobacco. In addition to generously supporting Fall for Smiles, 3M ESPE is also running a special promotion with Patterson Dental to benefit OHA's programs. Starting in September and running through the end of the year, 5 percent of all Vanish varnish sales made through Patterson Dental will be donated to OHA. Thank you, 3M ESPE, for your continued support of OHA's programs and campaigns.

Bringing Oral Health to Dallas Families

Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry recently participated in the Mayor's Back-to-School Fair in Dallas, providing dental screenings for more than 1,100 children and giving away a children's bicycle in a raffle. OHA supported Baylor's participation in the fair, which included sponsoring the raffle and providing Trident gum to be given away to attendees. We're proud to support the work Baylor did in promoting oral health to Dallas families.

Battling Big Tobacco

OHA's Melissa Hoebbel attended the 7th National Smokeless and Spit Tobacco Summit this month at the University of Montana on behalf of NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education Program) and as a member of the National Steering Committee. The conference focused on the rise of dual use and the tobacco industry's marketing tactics towards youth. Smiles Across America® partner Dr. Richard Meckstroth (pictured above) presented a sub-plenary on Smokeless Tobacco in Sports. Congratulations to the National Steering Committee on a successful conference that took a large step in the battle against smokeless tobacco.

Inspiring Future Dentists

OHA interns Jessica Williams and Andrew Halverson and Fellow Bailey Moorhead (pictured above left to right) had the opportunity to tour Smiles Across America® partner The Children's Clinic in Oak Park, Ill., which provides medical and dental services to thousands of underserved children in Chicago and Cook County. Dr. Jill Baskin, Oral Health Director, and Executive Director Elizabeth Lippitt spoke with Bailey, Jessica, and Andrew about The Children's Clinic's programs and Dr. Baskin was able to provide insight from her experience as a dentist as well. Thank you to The Children's Clinic for all the wonderful work you do and for spending time with our fellow and interns.
