Keeping Our Promise to Seal Two Million Teeth

OHA committed to sealing two million teeth for 500,000 children by 2020, a goal that we will reach later this year, a full five years ahead of schedule. To celebrate this accomplishment and emphasize the continued importance of dental sealants for children, OHA hosted a discussion of current and future school-based sealant initiatives at the Chicago Dental Society’s Annual Midwinter Meeting. OHA’s Beth Truett and Tina Montgomery spoke as well as Connie Kugel, Professional Relations and Marketing Manager of Pulpdent Corporation, Dr. Lynse Briney, Oral Health Director of Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society and Patrice Pascual, Executive Director of the Children's Dental Health Project. Learn more about Seal Two Million and how you can support dental sealants for children.
Recognizing the Importance of Family Caregivers
About 42 million family caregivers provide over 40 billion hours of unpaid care each year to an adult with limitations in daily activities. OHA supports these family caregivers through resources on toothwisdom.org and is now proud to be a part of the Assisting Caregivers Today (ACT) Caucus, which aims to bring greater attention to family caregiving, educate Congress on these issues and engage them on a bipartisan basis to help lead to solutions. The Caucus was launched with the the support of AARP and other national organizations, U.S. Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) (pictured above) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) and U.S. Representatives Diane Black (R-TN) and Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM). Learn more about the ACT Caucus here.
60th Anniversary Interview Series: Dr. John Williams and Dr. Charles Hine
In honor of our 60th anniversary, OHA is doing a series of interviews with people tied to our founding members and those currently leading the universities and companies that helped start what is now OHA. Our first interview is with Dr. John N. Williams, Dean of Indiana University School of Medicine, and Charles Hine, DDS MSD, grandson of Dr. Maynard Hine, IU Dean from 1945-1968 and an OHA founder. Find out how Dr. Maynard Hine's legacy lives on, both at IU, at OHA and through his family.

Groundbreaking Older Adult Workshop Pilot Expands
Following a successful pilot last summer in Chicago, OHA’s Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth is expanding to new markets this year—West suburban Chicago, statewide in Michigan and Portland, OR, with possible additional pilot locations throughout the year. The workshops, sponsored by The Retirement Research Foundation and Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, feature a curriculum designed to empower older adult participants to take charge of their oral health and are led by trained and highly skilled dental hygienists. The initiative’s long-term goal is to formulate trainings in a sustainable way to rollout Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth nationwide. Stay tuned for more details about the upcoming pilots.
Support Increased Access to Care with the Dental Reform Act
Last month Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) introduced The Comprehensive Dental Reform Act to Congress, which would extend comprehensive dental coverage to all Medicare, Medicaid and Veteran beneficiaries. The bill also increases access to care by funding oral health services in community settings such as community health centers (FQHCs) and school-based health centers.

OHA applauds Sen. Sanders and Rep. Cummings for their continued support of increasing access to oral healthcare and enthusiastically supports The Comprehensive Dental Reform Act. View the full language of the bill here and please contact your representatives in Congress and ask them to support S.570/H.R.1055.
Congratulations to Our Raffle Winners!
GC America colleagues Susan Benton, Nancy Michner and Kathy Bright (pictured above left to right) decided to take advantage of Kathy’s recent luck with lotteries and raffles while supporting a cause they all believed in and pooled their money to buy a raffle ticket for OHA’s recent Gala & Benefit. Kathy’s luck held—the trio won the cash prize in the raffle drawing. Kathy is using her winnings to take a trip to San Diego with her husband; Sue will be helping her daughter pay for her upcoming wedding; and Nancy is putting her winnings toward her son’s college tuition for next semester. Congratulations, ladies, and thank you for supporting OHA!

From the President & CEO: Honoring Our Founders

In 1955 a group of forward-thinking dentists founded The Foundation for Dental Education to assist in financing the training of promising dental educators who would be needed for the upcoming Baby Boomer generation. Today The Foundation for Dental Education is Oral Health America and to celebrate our 60th anniversary, we will be highlighting a series of interviews with people tied to our founding members and those currently leading the universities and companies that helped start what is now OHA. A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Mouth
One of the keys to a healthy mouth is eating healthy foods, which is why OHA wholeheartedly supports National Nutrition Month. In addition to daily brushing, flossing, rinsing and regular dental visits, eating a healthy diet helps prevent painful tooth decay that can lead to other health problems. Learn more about National Nutrition Month for tips about including healthy foods in your diet.
Former OHA Fellow Receives Prestigious Internship
OHA's Beth Truett was on hand when former OHA intern and fellow Ben Anders was recently named the 2015 ADEA/Sunstar/Jack Bresch Student Legislative Intern at a dinner honoring the 30th anniversary of the ADEA/Sunstar fellowships, pictured above with ADEA President Lily Garcia. Ben will spend six weeks working in the ADEA Policy Center in Washington, D.C. to learn about the legislative process and the formulation of public policy as it relates to academic dentistry.
