Does your Kitty need a BOOST?

The best way to keep your cat happy,
healthy, and loving you!

If you live with a cat, you know one thing for sure.  Cats are unique.  They pride themselves on it (no pun intended)...  Do something to "wrong" your cat, and you'll be shunned for your lack of judgement.  Well, your cat would like you to know, there has been a lot of improper use of essential oils with our feline friends.

Cats are certainly one of the most controversial species when it comes to using essential oils.  Daily, my inbox is flooded with questions of which oils can and can't be used with cats.  The next question to follow, is usually "how" do I use oils with my cat.

You'll need to CLICK HERE - and read more about cats and essential oils on the animalEO website.  Then, we'll continue on to discuss more about the KittyBoost.

Okay - so whether you agree with me or not - essential oils CAN be used with cats.  And, I have seen some very aggressive uses of essential oils, sometimes by accident, and sometimes by misguided information.  Regardless of why a cat has been over-exposed to essential oils, I always try to follow the case with blood work and data collection.  Although I would never purposely "over-dose" a cat with oils or expose them to things I believe may cause harm to them - there are plenty of well-intending persons who have.  And, I believe that gathering the data and information from these cases can help us to understand more about cats and oils.

The KittyBoost is a HUGE attempt to get people to use oils correctly, and safely for their felines.  There are not many techniques you need beyond Water-Based Diffusion, Litteroma, and a KittyBoost when it comes to cats.

The KittyBoost contains essential oils that we have used in cats for years, and even in one of our patients twice a day for over 3 years!!!  We have documented the long term use with this cat with regular blood work, urinalysis, and veterinary exams.  It is true, that this cat would likely not be alive today if it was not for this similar formulation and application of oils.  To date, I have likely recommended and used a formula similar to the current KittyBoost recipe, with over 2000 felines on a personal connection, and probably thousands more through advice given in my books and online classes.  What we routinely hear, is that "my cat hated oils before..."  The reason cats hate oils (and sometimes you) - is because we have used some poor techniques and advice when exposing them to essential oils.

Believe it or not, I was one of those people!  When I first started using essential oils on animals, I too was being taught by someone else.  This person was not a veterinarian, and actually didn't even live with an animal at that time in her life.  However, she had a lot of experience with recommending which oils to use, and how to use them.  With my own cat Wonka, I was told to dip his paw into a puddle of essential oils contained within the palm of my hand, for a diarrhea issue he was having.  HOLY BUCKETS!!!  If you know Sphynx Cats - you will know it is not easy to make them hate you.  But hate he did!  I was sleeping with one eye open!  It was a distinct case of over-using essential oils, and exposing an animal to them in a way that they really dislike.

So, yes, have I learned through experience?  Of course!  And, everyone should.  But, I have the wonderful ability to follow my cases and know what happens to them.  A quick recommendation to someone to "use this oil" followed by "just dab it on them" - often results in no follow through with the case.  I have been contacted by so many people who say, "I was sold this oil, then my cat freaked out, so I never used it again...  And, I never heard back from that person."  If the person recommending the oil is never told about what happened, they will never know that their recommendation might have hurt an animal.  But worse yet, I see a huge trend to brush off over-use as a "detox reaction" or as something that shows we are "pushing out something".  Yes, powerful oils can cause changes in an animal, sometimes dramatically.  However, I NEVER believe that we have to make an animal more uncomfortable while aiding in the healing process.

If I was not a veterinarian, and in charge of a case and what happened with it, I would have much less ability to learn about what works well, what is easiest for a client to do, and what various animal "personalities" will accept or not.  The wide variety of health challenges that I get to see, show me things that others may not consider when recommending something out of "good intentions."

So...let's move onto the GREAT things that the KittyBoost can do!!!  I'll refer you back to the KittyBoost page (just click on the name KittyBoost, and it will take you there) for all of the ingredients, and how to use it.  But, let's discuss some of the real world applications that we use KittyBoost for.

As you may have read, there are not many conditions in which a KittyBoost would not be recommended.  In short, this is for EVERYTHING!  General health maintenance, reduction and repelling of fleas and ticks, anti-viral needs, stomatitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, allergies, vaccination detoxification, skin infections, ear mites, arthritis, asthma, autoimmune conditions, diarrhea, Saddle Thrombus, cancer, diabetes, Herpes Virus, Feline Leukemia, urinary issues....you name it - I will likely recommend a KittyBoost!

And because cats actually enjoy the application, it is easy to use regularly.  Now, there certainly will be the occasional cat who does not enjoy it.  But, the majority of cats enjoy a KittyBoost far more than other application styles, blends, or singles.

Let's say your cat has ear mites.  Did you know that the mites actually live on the entire body, and not only in the ear?  Sure, this is where we recognize the symptoms, but your entire cat's body is actually infected with the mites.  YUCK!  That is why many "ear only" treatments out there, will fail miserably.  Whether natural remedy, over-the-counter, or veterinary prescribed - a treatment that only focuses on the ear, will take longer, tends to fail, and will leave your cat miserable for a longer period of time.  That being said, ear mites are not an easy fix naturally!  There is no magic essential oil that will wipe them out with one or two applications.  And most oils that kill ear mites, can be irritating to the ear tissues.  However, when you are using oils or any other natural remedy for ear mites, the KittyBoost is a mandatory addition in my eyes.  The oils within the KittyBoost are also anti-bug - and so it helps to eliminate the ear mites from the rest of the body, while it boosts the immune system and supports general health for the cat.  The KittyBoost can be swabbed inside the ear, in defense of the ear mites, and is a gentle start to the elimination process.  The animalEO blend Away, can also be very helpful when swabbing the ear for this condition - however is a much more intense blend.  Just saturate a q-tip with the KittyBoost solution, and gently swab the inside of the ear, daily if the cat and the ear tolerate it.  It is important to know that a lot of debris will usually start to come out of the ear, and that the tissues are already GREATLY irritated by the ear mite infection.  Without any essential oil applications at all, just basic cleaning of ear mite infested ears can result in severe itching and even bleeding.  So, it is important to recognize this fact, and to also know that applying essential oils to broken and irritated skin, can be even more irritating to a cat!

Often times, with health concerns such as ear mites, I would recommend that you use a daily application of the KittyBoost, with approximately 6-8 drops applied up the back, and massaged in.  Very young cats and kittens can also receive a KittyBoost, just use less drops - more like 3-4.

As you may have also read, your cat will usually be grooming and therefore ingesting some of the KittyBoost after application.  I see this a good thing!  It couldn't be easier to get your cat to ingest some beneficial oils, than after they have happily had a KittyBoost applied.  So, ingesting a little bit of Oregano - well that is a high powered antibiotic!  Ingesting a bit of Copaiba - that is a high powered anti-inflammatory.  Without you or the cat even knowing it - you have provided wonderful potential "side effects."

Unfortunately, we see oral cancer and stomatitis more and more these days.  And the routine ingestion of essential oils such as Frankincense, Copaiba, Myrrh, and Helichrysum in very small amounts, are critical to our patients' responses.  But, do you think a cat would be very happy if you drip the oils into their mouth, or try to rub them inside their mouths with your finger?  Heck no!  Apply the oils the way the cat enjoys, with oils that are specially blended, diluted, and created specifically for cats - then "trick" them into minor beneficial ingestions!  Little does your cat know!

Starting with a totally healthy cat or kitten, a monthly KittyBoost can help keep them that way.  Did they come from a shelter, where they just had an onslaught of vaccinations?  KittyBoost can help to repair unseen damage from over-vaccination.  Immune systems can be supported before disease sets in, instead of attempting to correct it after illness occurs.  I would rather prevent illness any day of the week, than try to treat it!

And, KittyBoost is not just for cats!  Certainly dogs can have the KittyBoost applied to them as well!  And, we have found it to be EXTREMELY helpful for chronic skin infections in dogs - especially yeasty, itchy feet!  We just massage a few drops of the KittyBoost into the affected area.  Usually, I am not a big fan of applying essential oils to feet - but in this case, the KittyBoost is properly diluted and mixed, to not be as irritating to the skin as a neat (undiluted) oil.  There was actually a recent research article that you can READ ABOUT HERE that demonstrated a great effect of essential oils against skin yeast infections.  Amazingly enough, the majority of oils used, are in the KittyBoost!

And remember, I only recommend the use of what I term, "veterinary grade essential oils" for use with animals (or humans for that matter).
The use of essential oils that have not been evaluated and proven safe for use in animals, is not recommended, and may prove dangerous for your animals.  Through research, case studies, and retrospective studies - I am documenting the difference in qualities of essential oils in my veterinary hospital - and we are continually striving to provide more information to everyone who desires to use essential oils for their animals.

Until Next Time!
