A healthy Litter Box??? Could it be!? animalEO Litteroma blends are HERE!!!
I've always promoted health and prevention - but when it comes to cats - EASY is also a very important consideration. Cats have their own thoughts and personalities. Just when you think you have figured out a solution that most cats will accept - you will always meet a cat that feels the complete opposite about the situation. That is the art (and difficulty) of being a feline practitioner or sharing your life with a cat!
With essential oil use - cats definitely rule the methods of application we select. And, just when you think you know what cats like - your cat will decide that the exact opposite works better for their important schedule. Well...that is until next week.
We won't dive into the whole Cat and Essential Oil Safety subject - as I have covered it multiple times. You can read about the subject, HERE or HERE or even HERE. But trust me...as a veterinarian it would generally be considered "unwise" to use toxic items in a product...and yes, that is a bit of sarcasm that you detect.
So without a huge discussion (after a week of traveling, I'm ready for a short newsletter!) - let's tell you the main points.
Litter boxes are a fact of life with cats. Most litter on the market is heavily fragranced with synthetic, nasty, and potentially toxic chemicals that I feel are certain to be detrimental to feline health. By eliminating these chemicals (get an unscented litter mainly) - and by adding essential oils into our litter box routines - we can support a variety of health challenges, support overall health, hopefully prevent future illness, and even provide odor control! Litteroma is indeed one of the coolest things ever!!!
When I add essential oils to a litter box - as described on our Litteroma Page HERE
- I can envision the tiny "healthy" molecules of essential oils being absorbed into their skin and feet as well as being inhaled into their respiratory tract. I can imagine the relief it might bring to an older arthritic cat, or to a cat with chronic respiratory infections or inflammation. Instead of a cat who absorbs, inhales, and grooms off toxic fragrances and clumping chemicals - the cat now is exposed to essential oils that carry so much beneficial medical research - the scales of benefits versus detriments are bound to lie in the favor of health!
Where toxic chemicals and fragrances are bound to undermine a healthy immune system, essential oils can support a healthy and functional immune system. Support health and healing. And, even support emotional happiness and the desire to USE the litter box! Each Litteroma blend contains a tiny amount of Catnip Essential Oil - which helps to draw cats to the litter box, and encourages them to use it (beyond the actual physical benefits that Catnip also carries).
All animals that use a litter box can use Litteroma. Ferrets, Rabbits, and even Rats. If litter is in their life - there is no problem in making the litter healthier. Some litter works better for Litteroma than others - so you may have to experiment a bit. Clay and clumping litter certainly does "take" the baking soda concoction a bit easier than newspaper pellets. But, a tiny sprinkling in any litter or litter box, is always bound to be more beneficial than not - even if it sinks to the very bottom of the box.
There are SIX new formulas of Litteroma! AllCat, KidneyCat, LiverCat, SmellyCat, SugarCat, and ThyroidCat. Hopefully you can get the general idea of what they are good for from the names! But, I'll refer you to their product and instructional page for more information there.
What have I done with Litteroma - and what have I seen with my patients? Cool stuff I think! For diabetic cats, I use Litteroma as a layer of support. We change diet, provide supplements, use topical essential oils (such as SugarBalance which is also coming as a new release), diffuse essential oils (really anything we like...), and also use Litteroma SugarCat as a multi-layer approach to supporting their body in sugar handling, insulin levels, and overall well-being. Litteroma becomes a very easy part of our layers - and for some cats could be the only layer that we can provide beyond diffusion.
For feral cats or rescue and shelter situations - Litteroma is an easy way to provide essential oil exposure to an entire population. Now instead of kitty litter being a potential irritant to respiratory tracts - we can mix Litteroma into an entire garbage can of kitty litter - and turn it into a health supporting agent. True - a supporting agent that the cat is sure to poop in...but I'm okay with that! What I see in our cat populations is less respiratory problems, support to arthritic older kitties, support to functional kidneys and urologic systems, less diarrhea and GI upset...and we never even had to handle the cat or train someone on how to use essential oils. They just had to have a litter box.
For cats who may have a bit of dislike for the litter box - we also find Litteroma to be of benefit. The essential oils have a calming effect and reduce stress - and Catnip oil can also encourage use of the box by attraction. Older cats who are stiff and may have a hard time climbing into a litter box, can find support for joint and musculoskeletal discomfort which also promotes litter box use. (By the way - please make sure your cat does not have ANY health related concerns with your veterinarian and that you have a brand new and ULTRA clean litter box before "just" trying essential oils for a litter box issue!)
With kittens, we start them using Litteroma from "litter box hood" - or basically from the time they start using the litter box. My goal is not only to eliminate those nasty toxins that are in the majority of litters, but to expose them to health supporting items while they are young and healthy. Hopefully, supporting continued health and prevention of common ailments such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, or even arthritis. To me - it is a far better gamble to potentially support this continued health, even if I can't prove it is happening, than to do nothing at all or worse yet, continue to use items that are certain to be "not so good" for a long healthy life. In general, using Litteroma AllCat is a fine selection for most cats and kittens in a prevention manner. However, I do rotate through all of the formulas to make sure that I cover all of my bases - and provide a bit more support to all of the body systems occasionally.
For a cat who may have kidney disease and liver disease - or for those of you with a "triple crown winner" - who have liver, kidney, AND thyroid dysfunction... Rotating through a few of the formulas is also a great thing to do. I will typically make one baking soda batch with AllCat, one with LiverCat, one with KidneyCat - and so forth. You might use AllCat for a week or a month, and then switch to another formula. Or use one formula until it is gone, then make up your next batch with a different formula. It doesn't often matter how you use them - but one of the best tips I can offer is that if you see your cat feeling particularly better while you use KidneyCat versus LiverCat - then feel free to use the KidneyCat version much more often or all the time. Sometimes one body system yearns for support more than another, even if blood work pushes us to believe that a different system is more compromised. I tend to respect the response of the cat, more-so than our belief in which system is most affected. And truly, all of the Litteroma blends support many aspects of the body - never "just the Liver" - so we really aren't ignoring other organs, we just might not be supporting them to the maximum.
Cats who are very difficult to treat - often take to Litteroma extremely well. Although we always recommend providing a box that does not have essential oils added to it - just in case the cat does not like it - we usually find that the cats use the Litteroma boxes more than the plain ones! And yes, I did count poop and pee piles in a variety of litter boxes just to see which formulas and concentrations got used the most!

And remember, I only recommend the use of what I term, "veterinary grade essential oils" for use with animals (or humans for that matter). The use of essential oils that have not been evaluated and proven safe for use in animals, is not recommended, and may prove dangerous for your animals. Through research, case studies, and retrospective studies - I am documenting the difference in qualities of essential oils in my veterinary hospital - and we are continually striving to provide more information to everyone who desires to use essential oils for their animals.
Until Next Time!
