IFS Organizing Campaign

In November, an organizing campaign at the Brampton-based Interstate Freight Systems Inc. (IFS) led to the employer firing ten of its truck drivers.  The drivers were working closely with Workers United in attempts to form a union in order to improve workplace conditions and safety. Instead, the drivers were met with intimidation, threats, and harassment by company President Paul Bhullar. An Unfair Labour Practice has been filed with the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) and we are advocating strongly on behalf of the workers.

2015 OFL Convention

The Ontario Federation of Labour's (OFL) recent 2015 November convention saw the election of a new OFL President, Chris Buckley from Unifor. The five-day convention also featured a panel presentation by Workers United own Joshua Borja and Rabia Syed, speaking on our recent Tim Horton's unionization victory in Winnipeg and the importance of unions and organizing young workers.

In January, members of Workers United Local 152 had their first inaugural 'Women of Winners' Lunch to discuss and plan the launch of the local's new Women's Committee.

Jimmy Dean, former President of Workers United and President of Local 210C (Coppley Apparel in Hamilton, ON), has retired after 50 years on the job. Solidarity with residents of
Flint, Michigan
Our partners from the Workers United Chicago & Midwest Regional Joint Board have been on the front lines in Flint, Michigan helping thousands of residents who have been coping with a water crisis after it was discovered that the city's water supply showed high levels of lead contamination. City officials have been blamed for causing the crisis when the city deliberately changed its water supply in order to save money. Workers United Canada Council has also stepped up by donating a pallet of water for Flint residents. Click here to learn more about Flint's water crisis.
